FIRST, RECALL… What is a monomer? What is a polymer? Mono= one -mer = part Building block What is a polymer? Poly=many -mer=part A polymer is a large molecule consisting of many smaller subunits bonded together.

FOLDABLE Take your construction paper and label the top: MACROMOLECULES Grab your two sheets of computer paper and fold them in half (hotdog style) and then fold in half again (hamburger style). Paste the two sheets of computer paper to the construction paper as shown. Cut the top flap of the computer paper in half to make four flaps. Label each flap: a) Carbohydrates b) Lipids c) Proteins d) Nucleic Acids

PROTEINS Monomer: amino acids Polymer: polypeptides Function: almost all functions of body; muscles, skin, hair; structural support; transport substances; speed up reactions; control cell growth; communicate between cells Examples: Enzymes, hormones, muscle Found In: Meat, legumes, nuts Elements: CHON
