Visual Arts 101-Unit 2 Mr. Green

Purposes of Visual Art Ceremonial Artistic Expression Narrative Functional Persuasive

Non-Performing Art Like writers, Visual Artists usually work more or less in isolation Their work is made public AFTER the act of creation

Elements of Visual Arts There are SEVEN (7) basic elements to remember and comprehend: Line Shape Texture Form Color Value Space

Line Most basic of all the elements EXTENSION OF A POINT IN SOME DIRECTION THROUGH SPACE Can be Regular or Irregular (dotted/dashed) Creates focal points-drawing the eye to a particular place

Shape Can be organic (irregular, natural) as related to nature/science Can be geometric (circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle)

Form Form indicates three dimensions Is created by use of techniques such as shadowing and perspective

Color Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue Mixing these colors creates secondary colors Mixing secondary and primary colors creates intermediate colors

Color Continued Cool Colors: Blue, Violet, Green Warm Colors: Red, Yellow, and Orange Analogous Colors: Next to each other on color wheel Complementary Colors: Opposite to each other on the color wheel

Texture Way something feels (or looks as if it would feel) Textures can be natural or human- made

Value How light or dark a hue appears Shade Value increases by adding black Tint Value increases by adding white Tone Value increases by adding grey

Space Area between, surrounding, or inside objects An object is the POSITIVE SPACE, while empty areas are areas surrounding the object make up the NEGATIVE SPACE

Instructions for today with schedule of next week Today: Think of a list of 3-5 objects that are man made from your home. Write them down on a separate piece of paper. After writing them down, please write a paragraph for each object explaining its importance to you. Make sure you can bring these items with you on Thursday, Friday, and Monday because these will be our focal points for our still life Monday: We will create a rough PENCIL BASED sketch of our man- made objects outside (depending on weather). While doing this, you will be given a chart that will need to be filled out that will go along with this project for Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday: We will be back outside (depending on weather) to COLOR your piece. This assignment is meant to take up the FULL TWO DAYS. Work patiently and give 110%.

Principles of Design Visual Artists use EIGHT (8) Principles of Design: Repetition Pattern Balance Emphasis Contrast Rhythm Proportion Movement

Repetition Shape, color, line or other elements used more than once in a particular work

Pattern The use of one or more elements in a regular and repeated manner

Balance Arrangement of objects or images in a work that avoids one overpowering another Symmetrical balance is a predictable, roughly mirrored arrangement Asymmetrical balance exists when two unequal objects or images appear to have equal ‘weight’ Radial balance sets objects or elements around a central point

Emphasis Sets the focal point Conveys the sense of importance attached to an object or element Controls what the viewer sees most prominently; most often, or for longer periods of time Color, size or any other element can create emphasis

Rhythm Elements are often used in ways that create a continual or repeated emphasis

Proportion Relationship of elements to each other Relationship of parts to the whole Size is a consideration

Movement Ways in which the viewer is directed through a piece Ways in which the eye is drawn to focal points A sense of action or motion in the piece

Contrast Showing differences WITHIN any of the elements

Communicating Meaning Artists attempt to convey IDEAS, EMOTIONS, EXPERIENCES, and even tell STORIES in their work The meanings they attach to what they create is communicated to viewers through the eyes alone

Types of Visual Artists After copying the list, please describe a specific work that such an artist might create Painter/Watercolorist Collage Artist Stone/Metal Sculptor Potter Architect Photographer Textile Artist Furniture Maker
