5 Elements of Visual Arts
There are SEVEN (7) basic elements to remember and comprehend: Line Shape Texture Form Color Value Space

6 Line Most basic of all the elements
EXTENSION OF A POINT IN SOME DIRECTION THROUGH SPACE Can be Regular or Irregular (dotted/dashed) Creates focal points-drawing the eye to a particular place

7 Shape Can be organic (irregular, natural) as related to nature/science
Can be geometric (circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle)

8 Form Form indicates three dimensions
Is created by use of techniques such as shadowing and perspective

9 Color Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, Blue
Mixing these colors creates secondary colors Mixing secondary and primary colors creates intermediate colors

Shade Value increases by adding black Tint Value increases by adding white Tone Value increases by adding grey

14 Space Area between, surrounding, or inside objects
An object is the POSITIVE SPACE, while empty areas are areas surrounding the object make up the NEGATIVE SPACE

15 Principles of Design Visual Artists use EIGHT (8) Principles of Design: Repetition Pattern Balance Emphasis Contrast Rhythm Proportion Movement

16 Repetition Shape, color, line or other elements used more than once in a particular work

17 Pattern The use of one or more elements in a regular and repeated manner

18 Balance Arrangement of objects or images in a work that avoids one overpowering another Symmetrical balance is a predictable, roughly mirrored arrangement Asymmetrical balance exists when two unequal objects or images appear to have equal ‘weight’ Radial balance sets objects or elements around a central point

19 Emphasis Sets the focal point
Conveys the sense of importance attached to an object or element Controls what the viewer sees most prominently; most often, or for longer periods of time Color, size or any other element can create emphasis

20 Rhythm Elements are often used in ways that create a continual or repeated emphasis

21 Proportion Relationship of elements to each other
Relationship of parts to the whole Size is a consideration

22 Movement Ways in which the viewer is directed through a piece
Ways in which the eye is drawn to focal points A sense of action or motion in the piece

23 Contrast Showing differences WITHIN any of the elements

24 Communicating Meaning
Artists attempt to convey IDEAS, EMOTIONS, EXPERIENCES, and even tell STORIES in their work The meanings they attach to what they create is communicated to viewers through the eyes alone
