Shoemake – Smith – Wendler September 7th, 2017 Welcome to Open House 2017-2018 Shoemake – Smith – Wendler September 7th, 2017

Morning Procedures Doors open at 7:30. No drop offs before as to avoid unattended students. Breakfast is from 7:30-7:55. STUDENTS NEED TO BE IN CLASS BY 8:00 OR ELSE THEY ARE TARDY Car riders should arrive early enough to eat breakfast before 7:55. Do not drop off at 7:55 and anticipate breakfast being served. Late buses will be accommodated.

Afternoon Transportation Changes No change of transportation after 2 pm. Parents will need to call and speak to a front office person who will then relay the information to the classroom teachers. NO emails or voicemail to teachers (they are teaching and can’t check these until after school!)

Allergies / Cafeteria Peanut free table now available in the cafeteria. Any student with a documented food allergy will sit at the designated tables. Duty people have a list.

Ceremonies / Awards Assemblies We will only be having an END OF YEAR academic award ceremony plus the EAFK ceremonies. NO middle of the year awards!! EAFK (Early Act First Knight) Dates September 28th (Respect & Friendliness) November 17th (Confidence & Responsibility) December 20th (Service) February 23rd (Discipline & Compassion) March 23rd (Perseverance & Tolerance) April 27th (Honesty)

School to Parent Communications Each Thursday a “Thursday Folder” is sent home. Please take ALL papers out of it. Return the folder on Friday. This is important! Graded papers keep at home. Notices from school and various agencies keep unless there is something that needs signatures There will be a weekly newsletter that can keep you updated on school and classroom events. An online newsletter is in the works. Please make sure we have your email address in order to receive this.

School to Parent Communication continued... There is a blue folder in your child’s binder. We will write any upcoming events and discipline notes there. If you check this daily you will be up to date with events at school. If your child has chosen to have a blue, yellow, orange or red for behavior, their calendar needs to be signed so that we know you are aware of their choices in school. Again, this will keep you aware of school situations.

Media Permission Slip A new permission slip will be sent out to cover media in the school. Like the yearbook. This will cover different items other than the ones covered with the Skyward permission slip.

Language Arts Reading and writing In the process of getting reading levels through I-station, DRA testing and Words Their Way testing Students need to read at least 20 minutes each night. Reading calendars coming home soon!

Date Title of Book Author Page Started Page Ended Genre Total Pages Read Minutes Read Genre

Math Students will begin bringing homework as extra practice Math projects are coming! These will be school based, but unfinished work will be brought home for completion. NIGHTLY MATH FACT PRACTICE IS A MUST! Automaticity is key to moving forward in math.

Science and Social Studies Texas Sprouts paperwork is almost all turned in! Lessons begin September 18! Experiments starting soon. Students need to wear appropriate attire (any day) but especially on science experiment day (long hair away from face, no loose clothing) Social Studies: early colonization of the United States
