Let’s walk through a typical day in Mrs. Ward’s Classroom. . . Welcome to our Back to School Night Let’s walk through a typical day in Mrs. Ward’s Classroom. . .

Students may enter the room at 8:30. Morning routines include unpacking backpacks, turning in homework, checking agenda books, writing in agendas, picking their lunch choice, and beginning morning work. Be sure that your child arrives prior to the 9:00 tardy bell.

Growth Mindset Classroom 9:00-9:20 Components: Message, sharing or activity, and news/announcements ENCORE: 11:30-12:15 Core Extension 3:03-3:33 Opportunities for differentiated reinforcement and enrichment

Wednesday and Thursday– PE Encore 11:30-12:15 Monday - Library Tuesday- Music Wednesday and Thursday– PE Friday - Art

Math Block 9:20-11:00 Whole Group Mini Lesson over the day’s specific math strategy followed by small group work, peer work, individual work, and whole class work.

Lunch/Recess 12:40-1:30 ***Note: If your child cannot participate in PE that day, he or she also cannot participate in recess. Sneakers are preferred for safety reasons.

Literacy Block 1:33-3:03 Mini-Lesson 15-20 minutes Whole group lesson focusing on a specific reading skill/SOL skill using the “Benchmark” reading program. Small Groups and Independent Study Time 70-80 minutes Guided Reading lessons, higher level question response journal, independent practice of mini-lesson skills, word study to include spelling and vocabulary, and writing/grammar skills.

Accelerated Reader Program When can I take a AR test? Tests may be taken after morning work has been completed, after regular work has been completed, OR during independent reading time. Where can I find AR books? Books may be checked out from the school library, or from any local library. Are students graded on AR books that they read? Students will receive a Comprehension Grade on these test. In order to achieve a 3, a student must receive at least and 80%. Test are given approx. every 2 weeks.

Time for BOTH Science and Social Studies 11:00-11:30 and 12:20-12:40 Social Studies – incorporated in morning Work and literacy block. Students study United States history through 1865. They do NOT have a Social Studies SOL this year. Science – Hands-on investigations, critical thinking, interactive notebooks, and study guides. Time for BOTH Science and Social Studies 11:00-11:30 and 12:20-12:40

Reading: Read for 20 min. and spelling/vocabulary practice, nightly Homework Reading: Read for 20 min. and spelling/vocabulary practice, nightly Unfinished classwork becomes homework Check over your child’s work Homework counts towards grades Always practice math facts when time is available.
