Kylee’s Career Path How to become an Editor

My Career Goals I want to become an Editor by 2024. To get there, I will need to: Get a final grade of at least 70% in English 11 or 12. Graduate high school by June, 2020. Graduate high school with an average over 85% in order to get into my university of choice, UBC. Graduate university and get a Bachelor’s degree in English by June 2024. Apply and get hired by a company in an Editor position by December 2024.

What is an Editor? Editors plan, coordinate, and revise content for publication in books, newspapers, websites, or magazines. Editors are in charge of reviewing and revising story ideas, digital media, book drafts, and/or articles. They also decide what material will appeal to readers and what will sell. Editors offer comments to authors in order to improve the product, e.g. suggest titles and headlines. These tasks can be shared among multiple people or one person depending on the size of the company. You will regularly read copy or proof drafts of writing and edit them, develop stories or ideas, taking into mind the readers, you will meet frequently with authors and other people in charge of different areas (artists, production, etc.)

About my future career This job can be done in an office or from home. Annual salary range: $33k - $81k The hours that you will work for this job vary depending on many different factors, such as the company you’re working at, when your deadlines are, dates of publication, etc.

My job has a 5.5% chance of becoming automated I don’t think my job will become automated because a computer doesn’t have the creativity needed to be an editor, you need to come up with story and content ideas which is a big part of the job and a computer can’t replicate that. The negotiating of materials and how the product will turn out is necessary and a computer can’t do that how it’s needed.

Being an Editor would be great for me because… I already have these skills for this career: Creativity, detail-orientation, good judgment, language skills, writing skills.

I am not quite ready for this career, but I will get there! These are skills for the job I still need to learn: Interpersonal skills. This is how I will get those necessary skills: I will work with other people more in a work environment, e.g. volunteering, get a part-time job, group projects. This way I will develop my needed skills with ease.

Job Outlook In BC, the job outlook is 3 of 3 stars. Here are 2 reasons why: Online publications are growing in number and sophistication, so more editors are needed. Online books and media is growing more popular so more editors will be needed because of the newfound ease of publishing works.

This is what appeals to me with this career… I can be creative and come up with story ideas, headlines, and titles. But I can also be a logical thinker while editing grammar, spelling, formation, etc. This is appealing to me because I don’t have to choose between an all creative career or a career where you use logical thinking all the time, it’s the best of both worlds. I can work from home if needed. Office environments aren’t my favourite, so being able to work from home would allow me to get more done and create better quality content. I very much enjoy reading, writing, and editing. It’s a passion, so being able to do something I’m passionate about for work would be a dream come true.

These are some things I find less appealing about this career… Having to work with people and show strong interpersonal skills might be a slightly less appealing part of the job, but I’m sure if I work with people who are just as passionate as me about writing and editing than I’ll enjoy working with them.

Potential obstacles to getting this career The possible obstacles: Not getting into UBC Not doing well in university, therefore not getting my Bachelor’s degree in English Not getting hired into an Editing position at a company My plan to overcome them: I can go to a different university, there are lots of good options in BC and Canada. I can always take a break from university, take some time off if I feel the stress is too much. I can then go back and continue when I feel ready. I can get some experience as an editor or a position similar before going straight to my ideal position and career/company.

Potential obstacles to being successful within this career The possible obstacles: The job being different than I imagined and I possibly not liking it as much as I thought I would. Not having the skills necessary for the job. My plan to overcome them: I can try to find a different position or company that I might be suited to more. I can develop those skills by practicing and learning from co-workers and superiors.

The training/education required for my career is: You need a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or English. Depending on the area of expertise your company has to you may need a degree in another area such as art or literature. You may also need work experience in this field. But no training is necessary.

I intend to go to UBC for this career Vancouver, BC, Canada. I would take the Bachelor of Arts program, my major would be English. The length of the program is four years. I would be completing a Bachelor’s Degree in English.

UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

High school courses required Grade 11 courses: Language 11 Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 11 An approved Science 11 (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, etc.) English 11 Grade 12 courses: English 12 Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 12

Additional Requirements: Final grade of 70% in Grade 11 or Grade 12 English is needed. Graduation from high school with a minimum average of 70% (or higher for many programs). UBC is known for STEM fields. I chose this university because it’s ranked the second best university in Canada. It’s also very close to my home, so travel would be easy. I have relatives who have gone to UBC as well and they were very successful in their field of study/career. I’ve heard lot’s of great things about UBC.

Financial Plan The total tuition of my four years of education including student fees would be approximately $24,000. I am going to pay for my program: I will get the money needed for my program from my university fund money saved, scholarships, a part-time job, and if needed student loans.

Some related occupations: Two related occupations to my choice career are an author and a journalist.

Editor’s are awesome!!! I find it exciting that I’ll be able to work with authors, read their stories, and do edits for them.
