CAREERS SYD STOLTZ

THE JOB MARKET & WHAT YOU NEED The job market is always changing. Who knows what jobs will be available in 5, 10 years from now? Your skills will depend on what kind of person you are. I personally like reading and Writing, and communications. I’m still deciding between something to do with writing and teaching. Skills always need to be updated and versatile, especially for a career in writing. Career Planning isn’t a one-time thing. Most people will change careers at least 7 times over their Lifetime! More jobs require reading, mathematics and communication skills. Career planning Includes thinking about: Type of employers who hire workers for a given category of work more commonly called occupational groups Job duties and responsibilities The level and type of education, training and experience required by workers in the group Main labour market characteristics of the group Job prospects for the next five years.

WRITING & JOURNALISM I think that for me, something in writing would interest me. There are many jobs in the writing industry such as: Creative writing Desktop publishing Marketing Public relations Technical writing Multimedia Printing Book publishing Magazine publishing Web design Journalism Editing Education Broadcaster Communications

WRITING & JOURNALISM Writing involves several different skills. Knowing how to use basics of technology is one, and being good with language in general and communicating are also important. Current events and things happening around the world are important to me, and I enjoy travel as well, so travel journalism would be something I would be interested in. Creative writing would also interest me, but I would want to make sure I was financially stable before going into creative writing – it can be really hit or miss with that job, as you can either make millions and become famous, or not be so successful – many authors fall into the second category. Communications would be another job path I could take, and also editing would be interesting and would interest me – I love to read, and I have good spelling and grammar skills. Another branch I could take that I’m seriously thinking about is teaching and education.

EDUCATION & AVERAGE SALARIES For most jobs nowadays, you need at least a high school diploma. Students who graduate from high school often Are more likely to get and keep a job as opposed to students who didn’t graduate. They are also more likely to be financially stable. Employers like to see at least a high school diploma, because it also proves that you can complete Deadlines and long-term goals. Many jobs now also require post-secondary education – whether it’s college, university, or Other experience. Some jobs in this field may take a few years of lower pay, but get better in the end. Average Annual Salaries: High School Teacher: 70,000 Proofreader: 43,150 Professor: 55,000-170,000 Assistant Editor: 54,000 Editor: 33,575 – 83,178 Journalist: 43,630 Communications: 61,142
