Future Ready It is the course of study developed to provide a strong academic foundation so that students are prepared and have many options when they graduate from high school whether they go to college, Military or work. The main idea is that students graduate…..ready for their future plans.

Future-Ready Core Diploma Requirements English I,II,III,IV (4 credits) Math I,II,III, fourth math course to be aligned with the student’s post high school plans (4 credits) Science Earth or Environmental, Biology, Physical Science (3 credits) Social Studies World History, American History I & II, Civics & Econ (4 credits) Healthful Living (1 credit) Electives (10 credits) 2 required from CTE, Arts or World Language; 8 recommended in a course concentration from CTE, Arts, other Total 26 credits

Promotion Standards From 9th grade: 6 units of credit, (4 credits at Early colleges/Academies) English I, two credits in the areas of math, social studies or Science and three additional electives (1 additional credit at Early College/Academies) Course Loads: Students are required to carry a course load equal to the number of instructional periods in the school day.

High School Courses Taken in Middle School If you complete a high school level course in middle school you will receive a high school credit if you: Earn a passing grade in the course and Achieve level III, IV, V on EOC (if applicable) Courses will count toward graduation requirements but not the high school GPA.

Attendance Attendance is mandatory! Any student that has more than 10 absences in a block or modified block class, 20 absences in a traditional year long class could be subject to automatic failure. Having 2 absences in a block schedule class is like missing 4 days of learning.

Block schedule Student take 4 courses, each semester Classes about 90 minutes An entire year’s worth of curriculum is compressed into one semester Grades start accumulating from day one!

9th Grade Couse Selections Overview

Recommendations 8th grade teachers made recommendations in core classes based on Wake County guidelines and student performance We encourage students to register using teacher recommendations, however parents may choose a higher or lower level course

Band & Chorus Most schools prefer you take these type classes all year, which will give 2 elective credits each year

World Languages Students who earn high school credit for Spanish I in middle school are encouraged to take Spanish II in 9th grade. World languages are sometimes offered in consecutive semesters in high school. For example you may have Spanish I in the Fall and Spanish II in the Spring World Languages are challenging courses that take dedicated study time, so you may delay starting a language course until Sophomore year unless you are currently taking Spanish.

Registering in Powerschools

Registering in Powerschools Students will use their Nced Cloud log in to register online. All students should have claimed their accounts earlier this year. Use registration worksheet to complete course selection Follow the Powerschool instructions provided Select Primary classes (total 8) Select 3 alternate classes. ***Make sure you select alternate courses that you are interested in taking, you may get them.

A word to the wise Remember to balance your academic and social life GET INVOLVED : Check out clubs, sports, organizations. This is a great way to make friends, discover new interest, develop leadership skills Get to know your high school counselor Be cautious about internet postings& social media accounts- colleges may do internet searches to gain information about you

Important Dates February 27-March 15: Students may register online at home using the instructions in the folder. March 5th ,6th ,13th, 14th: Lunch time Q & A for parents and students at DDMS entry way March 15-16: Students that were unable to register at home will register at school with Mrs. Young and Ms. Yates by appointment. March 19th : All registration must be completed. Course verification forms are due. These sheets MUST have both parent and student signature.
