2. Goals for Students and Parents
To learn about the “Future Ready Core” high school graduation requirements.
To understand courses your student must take to meet the graduation requirements.
To better understand the rigor of high school.
To lessen the stress and anxiety of high school transition time.

3. High School Terms
Elective course – any course not specifically required for graduation but taken as an option to fulfill the required number of credits for graduation.
EOC Tests- End-of-Course Exams created by the state. Counts for 25% of grade. All students must pass the 3 EOC’s to meet graduation requirements- Common Core Math I, English II, and Biology.
GPA – Grade Point Average calculated by dividing the quality points earned by number of courses taken.
HomeBase – Student and Parent Portal on PowerSchool. Parents and students can monitor grades, attendance and discipline.

Honors Course-advanced course earning 1/2 extra quality point for the final grade in the weighted GPA.
IB Diploma Programme- International Baccalaureate – Advanced Diploma Program available at 2 magnet high schools, Millbrook and Garner.
NCAA Clearinghouse – National Collegiate Athletic Assoc.- student athletes must register to participate in varsity college sports NHS – National Honor Society
Quality Points – Points earned for passing a course, honors, AP, and IB courses are allotted extra quality points for the “weighted” Grade Point Average (GPA).
Required Course – Course that must be taken and passed in order to earn a high school diploma.
Transcript – Official document listing courses, grades, GPA, class rank.

COURSE LOADS
Students are required to carry a course load equal to the number of instructional periods in the school
day.
I cannot stress the next part enough – Middle schools by their nature look at the whole child an make a decision to promote in some cases after a student has failed core classes. In high school if they fail a required class they fail… They can pass all classes with an A and they fail English they will not be promoted

7. DWFHS (Driving while Failing High School) Policy
Students must pass 70% of courses (3 out of 4 on a block schedule) to be able to obtain or maintain their drivers license!
They need 70% to get their license and to keep it. At the high school they will need their teachers to siqn-off on a form that the DMV requires to issue and maintain a license.

11. High School Courses Taken in Middle School
If your student completes a high school level course in middle school they will receive a high school credit if they:
Earn a passing grade in the course.
AND
Achieve level 3 or higher on EOC (if applicable).
Prove proficient on placement test. (Spanish only)
Courses will count toward graduation requirements but not the high school GPA.

Examples of 8th grade courses that fit this criteria at Leesville are CCMath1 and Spanish – these courses show-up on your HS transcript and provide HS credit toward required courses for graduation however they are not calculated into the students GPA

Future Ready are the required courses necessary for graduation.
Healthful Living – is NECESSARY for graduation…many students don’t like HL or dressing out. They need this to get their diploma. We are recommending that also students take HL in their freshman year – some high schools don’t give you a choice. They don’t want to be a senior having to take that class with all freshman either.
Electives – 4 recommended in an area of interest ex/ for classes of business or Band

Language – 6 credits
English – 4 credits
Second Language – 2 credits (recommended that highest level be taken in grade 12)
Math – 4 credits (C Math I, II and & 1 credit beyond Math III – recommended that highest level be taken in 12th grade)
Science - 3 credits (Biological, Physical and a lab science)
Social Studies – 2 credits (United States history & one other)
I like to go over this because the graduation requirements aren’t necessarily the same courses that colleges will expect students to take…
Second Language – many colleges will expect at least two years of a language and they often have students take placement tests so it is encouraged that student who wish to only take the minimum number of years in a second language do so in the 11th and 12th grade year.
Social Studies – covered with graduation requirements
Colleges expect the students to have their 12th grade year to be their most rigorous to show college readiness.

Students will be getting teacher recommendations – based on how they’re doing not how they could be doing.
Wake County has open enrollment – you can override the teachers recommendations and sign-up your student for Honors even if they were’nt recommended with the exception being Enloe

Students who earn HS credit for Spanish 1 in MS are encouraged to take Spanish II in 9th grade.
If you have not taken a World Language in MS you are encouraged to take a minimum of 2 credits in the same world language for admission to the UNC system.
The majority of students, without MS credit, are encouraged to take a world language starting their 10th grade year
Exceptions are Broughton, Millbrook, and Enloe – suggested starting in 9th grade.
