Common Application 7 Step Process Log on to www.commonapp.org Create an account Complete the entire application Request letters of recommendation Submit your teachers’ e-mail addresses Submit your counselor’s email address Complete all supplemental forms including essays

SUNY Application 7 Step Process: Ask for a transcript Request letters of recommendation from your teachers (if required) Create an account www.suny.edu/student Complete the generic SUNY application Print out counselor form and complete the transcript request form and bring it to your counselor with everything else you want mailed Complete the SOAR (Student Online Academic Record) Complete the supplemental application (if required)

Application Deadlines Vary by school Early Decision/Early Action are typically November 1 IF YOU ARE APPLYING EARLY DECISION MAKE SURE YOUR COUNSELOR KNOWS You should turn in applications ASAP but should shoot for before THANKSGIVING BREAK!

Letters of Reference Pick a teacher who knows you or who has a decent relationship with you Ask a teacher upfront if you are requesting a letter and give them the information they want Be aware of deadlines!!!!!! Do not spring it on someone last minute

Institution Scholarships All schools have different criteria. They may be based on: Financial Need GPA and/or SAT/ACT Scores Major Additional Application Athletic Honors program eligibility Research the schools you are applying to.

College Rep Visits Check out our calendar to see upcoming visits. Many schools will come and sit in the counseling office suite waiting for students to come down and ask questions. This is a great opportunity to ask those questions one on one!

FAQS I took the SAT/ACT and I did not like my score. I registered to retake the exam but it’s not until November. Should I hold off on applying? NOOO. Apply and submit a letter stating that you are not satisfied with your scores and you are currently registered to retake the exam on that date. Once you obtain the scores bring them to Guidance and we will put them on your transcript and send them out immediately.

FAQS One of the schools I applied to will not accept my SAT/ACT off of my transcript what do I do? When registering, the collegeboard and ACT allow you to submit your scores to 4 schools for free. If you did not OR forgot you must log into your account and pay to have them sent out to the schools.

FAQS What is the SAT Subject test and is it required? A small amount of colleges will require you to submit SAT Subject tests. These are tests offered during the regular testing dates that will test you in a specific academic area. Research the schools you are interested in.

FAQS The college asks me to “waive my right” to views letters of recommendation submitted, what do I do? Waive your right. This shows the college you trust the adult you asked to write the letter for you. Also why would you ask someone to write a letter for you that do not believe will do a good job? Pick someone you have a good relationship with and waive it.

FAQS What is the Excelsior Scholarship and how do I get it? NYS free tuition for families making $100,000 or less. Only for SUNY schools both 2 and 4 year. Several conditions apply and you will be under contract with NYS to stay and work here or free money turns in to loans. Visit www.hesc.com for more info
