Welcome to ninth-grade English class! Mrs. Daileanes Welcome to ninth-grade English class!

Required Materials 1 ½ -inch or 2-inch binder Lined paper with holes for binder 5 dividers with tabs (for sections) Pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers

Summer Reading College-preparatory: Test during first week of school on Tuesdays With Morrie! Honors: Test during first week of school on Night, Anne Frank, Fahrenheit 451, or Tom Sawyer (one book)! Both: Book groups will meet next week to discuss faculty favorites books and to turn in written journal entries.

Grading Policy 15 % homework 10 % classwork (5 % honors) including attendance, effort, and participation 25 % tests 15 % quizzes (20 % honors) 20 % writing and projects 15 % final exam (end of each quarter)

Homework Assigned nightly (including weekends) An extension of class work—reading, writing, vocab., writing skills Not busy work, but rather important independent learning! Half credit given for incomplete or missed assignments made up promptly Ten points deducted per day late on major writing & project assignments Can maintain and even boost your average!

Textbooks In addition to novels and plays, we use… Elements of Literature anthology Vocabulary for the High School Student English Workshop Elements of Writing (honors)

Basic Classroom Rules Come prepared with homework & books. Do not use put-downs or insults. Take off hats. Shut off cell phones. Put away iPods. Wear appropriate clothing. (See student handbook.)

Students will… Become independent learners. Schedule study/homework time on their own. Be accountable for their actions and words. Take classes that will prepare them for college. Connect with their teacher about learning topics. Further develop strengths and weaknesses. Think about where they’ll be five years from now…

Write effectively for a variety of purposes. Demonstrate the ability to access information from a variety of sources. Create informative, documented presentations.

Final Advice Read the books!  At least try the homework!  Have confidence in yourself!  Participate and ask questions!  Study!  See me before/after school for help!  Know that you won’t be a sophomore next year if you do not pass this class now or in summer school! 
