James Monroe - What accomplishments is James Monroe known for?

Monroe’s Land Acquisitions Cornell Notes Essential Question: How did the USA changes under president Monroe?

British Canada A) Rush-Bagot Agreement 1817 - Both the USA and British Canada wanted to keep fishing rights on the Great Lakes so this agreement was made to limit naval power on the Great Lakes for both the USA and British Canada.

B. Convention of 1818 - set the border between the United States and Canada at 49 degrees North latitude as far west as the Rocky Mountains. Both countries agree to occupy the Pacific Northwest together. This allowed both groups to participate the Oregon Country fur trade.

II. Florida

The Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 ceded Spanish East Florida to the USA. USA had a dispute over the southern border with Spanish Florida. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams held talks with Luis de Onis about letting americans settle in Florida. Meanwhile President Monroe sent US troops led by Andrew Jackson to secure the border. Conflict with the Seminole Indians - helped runaway slaves and raided U.S. settlements (First Seminole War). Andrew Jackson goes rogue - took over most of Spain's important military posts and overthrew the governor of Florida. He never had orders from president Monroe! His victories led the Spanish to negotiate and sign the Adams-Onis treaty. Spain gave East Florida to the USA USA gave up its claims to Texas and agrees to pay up to $5 million of us citizens’ claims against Spain.

III. Keeping the Balance - Missouri Compromise of 1820 - maintains the balance between free and slave states.

Terms of the Missouri Compromise 1. Missouri becomes a slave state. 2. Maine joins the union as a free states. 3. Missouri Compromise Line is drawn (at 36 longitude and 30 latitude) - Slavery would be prohibited (banned) north of the line, except Missouri. Slavery would be allowed south of the line, except Arkansas.
