I. Theodore Roosevelt’s Rise to Power 1900 Election - (Rep) William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt (VP) Defeated (Demo) William Jennings Bryan September 1901 - McKinley was Assassinated TR became - the youngest president

II. Asian Diplomacy 1899 - US major power in Asia 1894 war began between China and Japan over Korean Peninsula. Japanese won Korea became independent Japan got territory in Manchuria China looked weak and old Japan looked tough and modern Russia forced Japan out Russia granted rights to lease Spheres of Influence in China

Open Door Policy with China pushed for by Secretary of State John Hay.

Boxer Rebellion – Rebellion of Chinese against influence of foreigners. 200 foreigners killed International force put down the rebellion

1904 Russo-Japanese War – TR mediated conflict He was given the Nobel Peace prize in 1906 US/Russian/Japanese relations worsen – Each nation wanted greater influence in China

The Great White Fleet – 16 US battleships sent around the world to show off our strength. The Japanese visit hurt US/Japanese relations

III. The Panama Canal 1901 Hay-Paucefote Treaty – US / Britain Gave US exclusive rights to build and control Canal through Central America US bought property and rights from French company Columbia refused US offer to purchase land and grant rights

Panamanians declared independence from Columbia Made their own deal with US US supported Panama with its ships. US recognized Panama’s independence Signed treaty to build 40 mile canal in 1904 Took ten years

IV. The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine Stated the US would intervene in Latin American affairs when necessary – to maintain political and economic stability. First applied to Dominican Republic when it fell behind in debt payments

William Howard Taft continued TR’s policies Called Dollar Diplomacy US business investment to supported leaders in Asia and Latin America to promote stability and help US interests
