2. - Big Idea -
President McKinley was assassinated shortly after he was re-elected for a second term by Leon Czolgosky, and Theodore Roosevelt took over the presidency. Roosevelt was an energetic and enthusiastic man that believed the U.S. should increase it power world wide. He established the “Open Door Policy” with China to guarantee trade and he pushed for the construction of the Panama Canal.

1894 – War erupted between Japan and China over Korea– Japan won
China granted Korea independence
China gave Japan Manchuria territory
France, Germany, Russia forced Japan to give back Manchuria
Roosevelt negotiated a peace treaty between Russia & Japan – Nobel Peace Prize

7. Boxer Rebellion
Secret Chinese societies were organizing (Yi He Quan) Righteous Harmonious Fists – Boxers
Revolting against foreign country’s or “devils”
Killed over 200 people
U.S. asked for countries not to rebel

8. Roosevelt Believed in strong global military presence
Motto – “Speak softly and carry a big stick”
Make people think twice before attacking

Roosevelt wanted to show power
Paraded 16 Battleships around the world to show U.S. power
Showed Japan the U.S. was serious about its interests in Asia – created major tension between U.S. & Japan

Signed Hay-Pauncefote Treaty with Britain – Britain gave U.S. control of a canal in Cent. Am.
French co. had already started a canal / went bankrupt
