Education & Training needed -All journalism majors take courses in editing, journalistic ethics, reporting, feature writing, photojournalism and communications. Additional coursework is determined by whether a student is focusing on print or broadcast journalism. Students either take courses to strengthen their writing skills or to learn radio and television production techniques. Those concentrating in online media learn software and web design skills, as well as how to combine text with graphics, photo and video media. Undergraduate students also benefit from professional internships with media outlets, completed either during the summer or during the semester.

Skills & experience! Top-notch communication skills are mandatory for journalists. If you plan on entering broadcast journalism, polish your verbal communication skills. Regardless of the type of media you're interested in, your written communication skills need to demonstrate excellent grammar and spelling, and that you can write about a subject clearly and concisely. Journalists spend a lot of time researching subjects using a wide range of sources, so knowledge of electronic databases and archiving systems is helpful. Comfort with technology, such as computer software, cameras and recorders, can make the job easier. Journalist tasks:  Review and edit copy. Report and write stories for newspapers, magazines, radio, television, or the internet. Collect and interpret facts about news events through interviews, investigations, and observation. Work with news editor and reporters to generate new content.

Earnings..$$$ Journalists aren't exactly in the most profitable line of business; these folks earn a belt-tightening average of $38K annually. Career duration is the biggest factor affecting pay for this group, followed by geography. Women make up a slight majority of Journalists (51 percent) survey respondents. Medical benefits are awarded to a strong majority, and a little over a half earn dental coverage. Job satisfaction for Journalists is high.

Employment The unemployment rate for recent college grads was 7.7%, a half a point below the national rate of 8.2%. For experienced college graduates who worked in journalism, the rate was 6% and for those with graduate degrees, the unemployment rate for journalists was just 3.8%....

A Day In the life of: a journalist Life for a journalist can be a bit chaotic but for the most part, super exciting and productive! Journalists are kept busy through out the day to make sure they are reaching all deadlines. They are mainly spent outdoors, communicating with various people and doing plenty of writing.
