2 Journalist in the 21 st century  Reporters, editors, photographers, producers and camera crews who sift through the many events of a day to tell you what is important and interesting.  Journalism is the business of newsgathering and reporting  Reflection: What does it mean to be a journalist in the modern age (vs traditional) and in our school?  Summary: Summarize a news article. How does it reflect the 21 st century?

3 Reflection: What might be benefit of a freelance journalists? What are some drawbacks? Summary: summarize your article. How might being a freelance journalist have benefited this story? Freelance Journalist Journalists who do not work for a particular news outlet and they may cover stories for any news outlet that wants to hire them.

4 Newspaper Staff Reporters – Also called correspondents, gather information for stories by researching, observing and interviewing. They write most of the content. Reflection – How are reporters important to the news organization, and to the public? Summary – Summarize your news article. How did the reporter contribute to this article? Who else might have contributed and participated in the production?

5 Assign and approve the content – meaning stories, photos and videos – that will be produced for a print, broadcast or online news report. There are editors for news, sports, the arts, business and more. Editors Reflection: How do editors help make the paper the best quality? What would be the toughest part of being an editor? The easiest? Summarize: Summarize your article. How might the editor have contributed to the story?

6 Photographers – take still shots for a story Videographers – tell stories with moving images and capture the story in video. Reflection – How do good quality photographs contribute to news? How can poor photographs detract? Summary – Summarize a news story. Did it include photographs or videos? How did it contribute, or would it have contributed? Newspaper Staff

7 Copy Editors–edit the text of the story. They check the facts and correct errors in spelling and grammar before publication. Copy editors also write headlines and photo captions. Reflection – Why are copy editors important? Summary – Summarize a news story. How might the copy editor have contributed? Did they miss anything? Newspaper Staff

8 Designers – determine, with the top editors, where content will be placed on printed pages or how it will be arranged on websites. Reflection –What role does the design play in the readability of the paper and its stories? Summary - How might the designer have made sure the story your read was easy to find and read? Newspaper Staff

9 Artists–work with editors and reporters to produce illustrations, charts, graphs, maps or other material that will help tell a story. Reflection – How do artists help make the news easy to understand? Summary – Summarize a news story. Did the piece employ art? If so, how? If not, how could it have? Newspaper Staff
