TODAYS discussion Review of last class Nature Organization Behavior Scope of Organization Behavior UNIT I O & B

NATURE OF OB An integral part of management A field of study Inter –disciplinary approach Levels of approach Goal –oriented Human tool Science and art Satisfaction of employee’s needs Humanistic and optimistic Oriented towards organization objectives UNIT I O & B

An integral part of management OB is a part of general management and not the whole management. It represents behavior approach to management. It is significant to note that because of the importance of human behavior in organization, OB has assumed the status of a distinct field of study UNIT I O & B

A field of study OB is the field of study backed by a body of theory, research and application associated with a growing concern for people at workplace. Its study helps in understanding the human behavior in work organizations. it inculcates creative thinking among the managers to solve human problems in organizations. UNIT I O & B

Inter – disciplinary approach The field of ob is heavily influenced by several other behavior sciences and social sciences. The prominent among these are psychology, sociology, anthropology. Organizational behavior draws a rich array research from these disciplines. What makes it a field in its own right is the attempt to integrate various aspects and levels of behavior UNIT I O & B

Levels of approach OB involves three levels of analysis of behavior- individual behavior , group behavior and behavior in an organization itself. It helps in demolishing ‘ incorrect’ assumptions one may hold about behavior. It provides a rational thinking about people UNIT I O & B

Goal –oriented OB is an action- oriented and goal oriented discipline. The major goals of OB are to understand, explain and predict human behavior in the organizational context so that it may be molded into result yielding situations. It provides a rational thinking about people and their behavior. UNIT I O & B

Human tool OB is a human tool for human for human benefit. It helps in understanding and predicting the behavior of individuals. It provides generalizations that managers can use to anticipate the effects of certain actions of the human behavior UNIT I O & B

Science and art OB is both science as well as art. The systematic knowledge about human behavior is science and the application of behavioral knowledge skills clearly learn towards being an art. UNIT I O & B

Satisfaction of employee’s needs OB seeks to fulfill employees need and aspirations. Every employee in the organization wants to fulfill his needs through organizational activities. It is the organization’s responsibility to provide congenial climate in the organization so that people may get need satisfaction and the organization may attain its objectives. Thus, both organization and individuals can be benefited by each other. UNIT I O & B

Humanistic and optimistic OB focuses the attention on people from humanistic point of view. It is based on the belief that needs and motivation of people are high concern. There is an acceptance of the value of the individual as thinking, feeling organism, and without these considerations the organizations may not be fully operational as social entity. Further, there is optimism about the innate potential of man to be independent, creative, productive, and capable of contributing positively to the objectives of the organization. UNIT I O & B

Oriented towards organization objectives OB, being an applied science and emphasizing human aspect of the organization, is oriented towards organizational objectives. Though an organization may have several objectives and sometimes conflicting with individual objectives, it should not be understood that OB only emphasis the achievement of individual objectives at the cost of organizational objectives .in fact, OB tries to integrate two types of objectives so that both are achieved simultaneously. For this purpose, it suggests various behavioral approaches. UNIT I O & B

SCOPE OF OB The scope of OB may be summed up in the words of the S.P Robbin as follows:” OB is the field of study that investigate the impact that individuals, groups, and structure have on behavior within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge of all these is applied to make the organization work more effectively The scope of organization behavior encompasses as following aspects UNIT I O & B

INCREASING ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS Organizational behavior is a field of study . It is relatively a new discipline which has a distinct area of expertise with a well defined body of knowledge. OB studies three determinants of behavior in organizations: individuals, groups and structure. The behavior of individuals and groups and the impact of structural design on the behavior of individuals and groups are the major concern of OB. The knowledge of all these is applied to make the organization work more effectively. UNIT I O & B

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN BEHAVIOUR IN AN ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING Organizational behavior is concerned with understanding and describing human behavior in an organization setting. It seeks to shed light on the complex human factor in organizations by identifying causes and effects of human behavior. It is called a social science because its main concern is people and their behavior . It is the field of study that integrates behavioral sciences like psychology, sociology and anthology for the study of human behavior in and around organizations. UNIT I O & B
