Integral part of Management Field of study Inter Disciplinary Approvals Analysis of Behaviour Goal Oriented Human Tool Science and Art Fulfillment of Employees need Humanistic and Optimistic Oriented towards Organisational goals Total System Approach

2 NATURE OF OB 1)Integral part of Management: OB is a part of general management and not the whole management. It represents behaviour approach to management b’cos of importance of human behaviour in organizations. 2) Field of Study: OB is a field of study backed by a body of theory, research and application associated with a growing concern for people at the work place . Its study helps in understanding the human behaviour in work organisations. It inculcates creative thinking among the managers to solve human problems in organization. 3)Inter Disciplinary Approach: The field of OB is heavily influenced by several other behaviour sciences and social sciences. The prominent among these are psychology, sociology and anthropology. OB draws a rich array of research from these discipline. 4) Analysis of Behaviour: OB involves three levels of analysis of behaviour – Individual behaviour, group behaviour and behaviour of the organisation itself. It helps in demolishing “Incorrect” assumptions one may hold about behavior. It provides a rational thinking about people. 5) Goal Oriented: OB is an action oriented and goal directed discipline. The major goals of OB are to understand, explain and predict human behaviour in the organizational context so that it may be molded in to result yielding situations.

3 NATURE OF OB 6) Human Tool: OB is a human tool for human benefit. It helps in understanding and predict the human behaviour of individuals. It provides generalization that managers can use to anticipate the effects of certain actions on human behaviour. 7) Science and Art: OB is both science as well as an art. The systemic knowledge about human behaviour is a science. The application of behavioural knowledge and skills clearly towards being an art. However OB is not an exact science like physics or chemistry. It cannot provide specific answers to all organizational problems. The exact prediction of behaviour of people in organizations also not possible to predict relationships between variables on a broad scale. But it is difficult to apply predicate models in all situations. 8) Fulfillment of Employee’s Needs: OB seeks to fulfill employees needs and aspirations. Every employee in the organization wants to fulfill his needs through organizational activities. It is the organization's responsibility to provide congenial climate in the organization so that people may get need satisfaction and the organisation may attain its objectives. Thus, both organization and individuals can be benefited by each other. 9) Humanistic and Optimistic: OB focuses the attention of people from humanistic point of view. It is based on the belief that needs and motivation of people are of high concern. There is an acceptance of the value of the individual as a thinking, feeling being and without these consideration the organization may not be fully operational as a social entity. Further, there is optimism about the innate potential of man to be independent, creative, productive, and capable of contributing positively to the objectives of the organizations. The man will actualize these potentials if given proper conditions and environments.

4 NATURE OF OB 10) Oriented towards Organizational Objectives:
Though an organization may have several objectives and sometimes conflicting with indivivdual’s objectives, it should not be understood that OB only emphasises the achievement of individual objectives at the cost of organizational objectives. In fact that OB tries to integrate two types of objectives so that both are achieved simultaneously. For this purpose, it suggests various behavioural approaches. 11) Total Systems Approach: OB is an total system approach wherein the living system of the organization is viewed as an enlargement of a man. The system approach is an integrative approach which take into account all variables affecting organizational functioning. In fact the system thinking in organizational analysis has been developed by behavioural scientists. Behavioural science, while analysing OB, does not take human being in isolation but as the product of socio psychological factors. Thus his behaviour can be analysed keeping in view his psychological framework, interpersonal orientation, group influence and social and cultural factors. Thus, man’s nature is quite complex and OB by applying systems approach tries to find solution of this complexity.

5 Scope of OB Scope of Organizational Behaviour Skill Development
Personal Growth through Insight and Human Behaviour Enhancement of Organizational and Individual Effectiveness' Sharpening and Refining of Common Sense

6 Scope of OB OB attempts to explain how and why people in business firms and other organization, private or public act as they do singly and in groups . It looks at the needs and actions of both managers and non managers. It should therefore help to provide present and future managers ,whatever their level in their organization, with a sounder understanding of the problems actually encountered in managing and working with people. It should also help them to realise the alternative solution available when confronted by human relations problems within the organization. Scope of OB covers various areas which are as follows: 1)Skill Development: An essential requirement for entering into surviving and succeeding in the modern work place is to have the appropriate skills. A person needs both skills related to his or her discipline and generic skills such as problem solving and dealing with people. The study of OB contributes directly to these generic skills. OB skills have gained in importance in the modern work place. A relevant example is that many Chief Information Officers now need information technology professionals to get more involved in business concerns, to interact with other department and to communicate more effectively with colleagues. Soft skills such as business insight, communication, leadership and project management become more important as specialists such as information technology professionals get more involved in the overall business. 2) Personal Growth through Insight into Human Behaviour: OB helps in studying personal fulfillment gained from understanding others. Understanding fellow human beings can also lead to enhanced self knowledge and self insight. For eg; While studying what motivates others, person may gain an understanding of what motivates him.

7 Scope of OB 3) Enhancement of organisational and Individual Effectiveness: A major benefit from studying OB is that it provides information that can be applied to organizational problems. An important goal of OB is to improve organizational effectiveness – the extent to which the an organization is productive and satisfies the demands of its interested parties. One Eg; Teams in the workplace OB contributes insights and skills that can enhance individual effectiveness. If a person develops knowledge about subjects such as improved interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and teamwork he or she will become more effective. A specific example is that knowledge about OB can contribute to high performance. 4) Sharpening and Refining of Common Sense: Studying OB is relevant to managers, b’cos the managerial jobs involves dealing with people and one cannot learn that through a book. However logic such as opinion might sound, common sense is not an adequate substitute for knowledge about OB. The knowledge sharpens and enlarges the domain for common sense. It markedly reduces the amount of time necessary to learn important behaviour and skills. By studying OB, one might learn that recognition should be given frequently but not every time somebody attains high performance. One might learn that the type of recognition one gives should be tailored to the individuals personality and preferences. For eg; some people like flamoboyant praise, while others prefer praise focused tightly on the merits of their work. Formal knowledge thus enhances individual effectiveness.
