Student Computing @ Monmouth College

Welcome! Welcome to Monmouth College! The staff of the Information Systems Center (ISC) looks forward to meeting you and wants you to know that if you have any computer-related questions or problems, we're here to help.

About the Information Systems Center

About the ISC Location: First floor of the library (across from the coffee shop) Hours: Mon. – Fri. from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Phone: x2106

About the ISC Cont’d. Web: From the MC home page, click on the Campus Quick Links down arrow and select Computer Center

Computer Labs

Computer Labs Computer labs are located in the library and in all of the academic buildings. The Mellinger lab is open 24 hours. (You can use your ID card to get in if the building is locked.) All other labs are open until midnight.

Computer Labs Cont’d. All of the labs, except for the library lab, may be reserved for classes. (If a lab is being used by a class, then you should find another lab to use or wait until the class is over.)

Computer Labs Cont’d. When you’re done using a lab computer, be sure to log off of it so that no one else can access your computer account. To log off, click on the Start button and select Log Off.

Passwords

Passwords Change your password periodically. (Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on a lab computer and then click on the Change Password button.) New passwords must be at least five characters in length and should contain a combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation. Keep your password secret. Don’t ever share it with anyone! T2J?lqwR5

Passwords Cont’d. If you forget your password, you can bring your photo ID to the Information Systems Center and ask to have it reset.

Saving Files

Saving Files Save your academic files in your My Documents folder on your F: drive. The F: drive is backed up each night. (If you ever accidentally delete a file, and it’s been backed up, the ISC should be able to provide you with a backed-up copy of the file.) You will be able to access your F: drive files this semester from your room or off campus via the Web.

Saving Files Cont’d. Your F: drive space is 100 MB. (When you get close to this limit, a message will display when you log on to let you know.) Watch the file sizes of picture, audio, or video files you store on the F: drive because they can eat up a lot of space. The G: drive provides additional storage space, but it is NOT backed up. DO NOT STORE IMPORTANT FILES ON THE G: DRIVE!

E-Mail

E-Mail Your e-mail space is 100 MB. (When you get close to this limit, you’ll receive an automated message from the System Administrator to let you know.) To keep your e-mail space from filling up, periodically clean out your Inbox, Sent Items, and Deleted Items folders.

E-Mail Cont’d. Sending mass e-mails is against Monmouth College policy. Instead, post announcements in the Outlook Message Center folders.

Printing

Printing When you log on to a lab computer, your default printer automatically changes to the printer of the lab you are in. Lab printers are to be used for Monmouth College academic use only. You may print single copies of papers or class handouts (not including draft copies). Copy machines are available if multiple copies are needed.

Personal Computers

Personal Computers It’s important to use up-to-date virus, spyware, and firewall protection on your personal computer. It’s also important to keep your Windows operating system up-to-date. The ISC can provide limited support for your personal computer. (We can help you with network connection problems and virus/spyware infections.)

Wireless Access

Wireless Access Wireless access is available in all campus buildings. To connect to the wireless network, select mcpublic. Do not tamper with the access points in the residence halls. They are “dummies” that will not work in a stand-alone environment.

Internet Use

Internet Use At Monmouth College, academic Internet use always takes priority over recreational Internet use.

Internet Use Cont’d. Network bandwidth is a resource shared by everyone on campus, so please help to conserve it. You can conserve bandwidth by disconnecting from Internet radio when you leave your computer, downloading one file at a time, scheduling automatic downloads to run between 2:00 – 6:00 a.m., and turning off your computer when you’re not using it.

Internet Use Cont’d. Remember that downloading or serving electronic files that contain copyrighted material is a violation of Monmouth College policy.
