1 Computer Labs Orientation September 2003 Prepared by Computer Services

2 The Student Network is accessible from several locations  2 nd Floor E-Wing  Learning Resource Centre (LRC) (H1112)  The Learning Centre (TLC) (E1103)  Native Education Centre (G1200)  Employment Services (E1107)  B-Wing General Purpose Labs (B1025 and B1055)  Lecture Theatre (E1603) and other designated classrooms

8 Hours  Computer labs are open 7 days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

9 The Lab Support Office is located in E2115  The primary role of the Lab Support Technician is to ensure that the hardware and software in the labs is working properly.  Your Campus One Card (student card) is required for assistance regarding your computer account.

11 Computer Accounts  All registered Sault College students receive a computer account.  Your username is your student number (8 digits).  Your password is initially set to your last name.  If you require assistance with your account you must bring your Campus One Card (student card) to the Lab Support Office (E2115).

12 Security Policy  All users of Sault College computers must adhere to the Sault College Computer Use & Security Policy.  The policy can be found at the following website: http://www.saultc.on.ca/security.html  During your initial login you will have the opportunity to read the entire policy.  The use of your account on the Sault College network indicates your agreement with the policy and its procedures.

13 E-Mail  All students receive a Sault College E-Mail account.  Sault College’s standard E-Mail package is Microsoft Outlook.  E-mail access is available from home. Handouts are available outside Lab Support Office.

14 E-Mail  Student E-Mail address is: firstname.lastname@student.saultc.on.ca  Username to access E-Mail is: studentnumber+student.saultc.on.ca  Password is initially set to last name.  Changing your computer account password will also change your password for accessing E-Mail.

15 Sending E-Mail  Sending mail to another student’s E-Mail address: firstname.lastname@student.saultc.on.ca  Sending mail to a faculty/staff E-Mail address: firstname.lastname@saultc.on.ca

16 Internet Access  All registered students have access to the Internet at the college.  Microsoft Internet Explorer is the supported web browser.

17 Passwords  All students must change their password once per semester.  In the fall semester it must be changed prior to September 30 th.  In the winter semester it must be changed prior to January 31 st.  If you do not change your password your account will expire.

18 Passwords  To change your password, visit the Student Web Page at http://wwwstd.saultc.on.ca  Your password is changed for both your computer account and your email account.  Do not give your password to anyone.  You are responsible for any actions taken by anyone using your account.

19 Hints on Changing Password  All passwords are automatically changed to lower case.  Special characters are not allowed ~!@#$%^&*_+(;-).  Pick something easy to remember.  You should not use a spouse’s or child’s name since these are easy to guess.  Passwords must be a minimum of 8 characters and a maximum of 14 characters.

20 Reporting Problems in the Labs  Click on the Request Help button on the Student Web Page.  Send an E-Mail message to labhelp@saultc.on.ca  Visit the Lab Support Office (E2115)

21 Disk Quota  All students are allocated a 50MB disk quota (G: Drive).  In order to see the current amount of used space: –Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then double-click on your G: Drive –Hold down CTRL key and press the letter A (this will select all files and folders) –Hold down ALT key and press the ENTER key (this will display the amount of used space).

22 Printing  When printing from the 3 computer labs on the South side (E2110, E2130 and E2150): Print jobs will appear at printers 3 and 4.  When printing from the 3 computer labs on the North side (E2120, E2140 and E2160): Print jobs will appear at printers 5 and 6.

23 Print Quota  All students are allotted a print quota.  Full time students receive a quota of 250 pages (laser printing) per semester valued at $37.50.  Non-full time students receive a quota based on the number of contact hours.  Once a student exceeds their print quota, they will have to purchase extra printing at 15¢ per page.  To check your print quota, click on the Start button then click on Print Quota Inquiry.

24 Banner Page  When you print a document, a banner page is generated. The banner page lists the person’s username and the time the document was printed.  The banner page is a system generated page and does not count towards your print quota.  When you pick up your printout it is important to leave other students’ printouts intact as the papers can easily be mixed up.

25 Colour Printing  Colour printing is available on the 2 nd Floor E- Wing at a cost of $1.00 per page. (This will be deducted from your print quota.)  Print jobs may be submitted from the computer labs or from the computer located beside the colour printer (E2102).  Prior to submitting your print job ensure that all text is properly aligned and formatted.

26 CD Re-Writer  There is a CD-ROM re-writer located in the print room (E2102).  Refer to the handout beside the computer for instructions on how to use the CD-ROM re-writer.

27 Scanners  There are scanners available for student use in the following locations: –The 2 nd Floor E-Wing (E2102) –The Learning Resource Centre (H1112) –The Learning Centre (E1103).

28 Viruses  Sault College uses Command Anti-Virus Software.  The Computer Labs use Sheriff Cards on all computers, which prevents software from writing information to the hard drive permanently.  If a virus is found on the computer, simply restart the computer and the virus will be gone.  Students can scan their disks for viruses before bringing them home.
