Writing Alive!! What is Writing Alive? Writing Alive is a rigorous, standards based writing program which focuses on the process, not just the content. It teaches students the process of organizing, synthesizing, communicating and assessing their writing. What will writing time look like? There are four legs of Writing Alive: Daily Sentence Styling: For 15 minutes every day, DSS teaches students to use grammar skills and a different writing trait each day to revise and improve their writing. The revision process is broken into small chunks to help students internalize it. Monday: practice hand-on sentence structure Tuesday: identify sentence parts and genre coponents Wednesday: activate with vivid verbs, improve word choice Thursday: create fluency, style and add details Friday: edit conventions

Writing Alive Cont. Writing Period: Guide students in the planning process and interact with students as they draft. Writing is broken down into smaller chunks using common language. -Monday: four-step direct instruction of a skill -Tuesday: a short writing piece to develop a skill -Wednesday: begins the writing process: plan and rehearse -Thursday: set goals and draft -Friday: assess goals and revision lesson Goal Setting and Assessment: The teacher sets goals from a check list or rubric. The rubrics are organized by component and help students monitor and improve their writing. Growth is intentional. Writing Across the Curriculum:

Science Science: Piloting Phenomenal Science Thinking and Acting like a scientist “Let it Rip” Energy in Mechanical Systems “Built for Survival” Structure Function “Surfs Up” Waves “Big Blue Marble” Earth Systems
