2  Grammar, test prep questions, journals  Spelling/vocabulary practice- weekly Wednesday to Wednesday, test each week  Reading Skills- read it, understand it, think it through  Writing Skills- sentence structure, paragraphing  Students are expected to hand write drafts AND edit/revise their own work. Adult help will come after the student process.

5  Homework is to read 20+ minutes a night. More is always encouraged.  Reading assignments at home so we can spend time discussing in class.  Practice, practice, practice. Read aloud, read together, read anything!  Student should always have a book to read in his/her bag. It is worth a grade for Language class.

6  Writing Process  Pre-write, draft, revise, edit, publish  Writing Elements  Six Traits (word choice, conventions)  Writing Applications  Expressive, Expository, Functional, Persuasive, Literary Response, Research  Grammar, editing, structure (AIMS)  Responding to prompts

7  Focus of a writing may only be on opening sentence or conclusion or voice.  Students will do it until they get it right. Corrections and revisions are a must.  We encourage students to write in cursive for formal assessments. Research shows…  Take the time to do it right.

8  Research will mostly be done at school, but you may need to do more at home.  Rough drafts, editing/revising, final copy  Final copy- hand written in blue or black ink, OR typed  Grading rubrics, directions and handouts will be on my web site.

9  Read each night (20+ minutes)  Spelling/vocabulary practice -Due each Wednesday  Grammar practice  Unfinished class work  Occasional time for research if doing a project  Book report on going throughout the quarter

10  Books must be grade level or above. Required number of pages for each quarter is 125+.  Report directions and grading rubric are on my web site.  Be sure to check that all directions have been followed.  Students need to read new books to them. If the book has been made into a movie……I want them to write about the book.  Parent signature on the book report

11  Please use the Parent Portal to check grade and work completion status.  Student receive daily grades for class work and homework. This includes “walk-ins”.  Larger assignments such as projects, reader’s response, research, creative writing work will receive more points than daily work.
