3 Class Policies We practice Positive Behavior Support

Behavior Guide Clear and consistent behavior expectations Homework Expectations Most weekly homework assigned Monday & due Friday Current events study via Google Classroom Vocabulary enrichment Daily math homework (online and/or paper) Daily reading (20 minutes minimum) Band and Orchestra students must keep track of and make-up any classwork that is missed due to practice sessions

4 Communication Weekly Friday Folders are used for students to take completed work home. A weekly ed grade-level newsletter will be sent to all parents every Friday providing updates on classroom activities and future events. The student planner is used for organization of assignments. Please check your child’s planner to remain aware of assignments. Please check our 5th grade website for updated information, important documents, and permission slips. Please contact your child’s teacher for volunteer opportunities

5 Literacy Reading Units of Study Character study, analyzing informational texts, comparing theme across genres, & multiple perspectives. Non-fiction text features & structures, main idea, higher level comprehension Reading Workshop: Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Responding to Reading, Word Study Practice: Guided Reading , Reciprocal Teaching (student-led lit circles), Comprehension Skills, Goal Setting

Writing Genres: Narratives - Poetry - Short Stories – Explanatory- Persuasive -Informational Writers Workshop Practicing the Writing Process In fifth grade, we focus on the writing process, with an emphasis on planning, drafting, revising, & editing our work weekly. An engaging & explorative environment where students challenge their skills through mini-lessons, hands-on activities, technology, and project-based learning Math Expressions - Resource Differentiated instruction & practice with engaging student investigations Please look for family letters coming home with details and tips for each unit of study Areas of Study: Fractions with like and unlike denominators Computation using whole numbers and decimals Algebraic Expressions, Orders of Operations Area & Volume Graphing & Geometry Use of Measurements- Standard and Metric Conversions Data expression & interpretation Problem Solving Strategies
