Health and Wellness Chapter 1, Lesson 1

E.Q. What is health? Objectives Define health Describe how the components of health can be represented in a triangle Describe the importance of health education and relate wellness to total health

“How are you?” Why do people say how are you instead of “Do you have a disease?” Because health involves much more than your physical condition.

What is health? Health – combination of your physical, mental/emotional and social well-being. Your personal level of health affects everything about you. If you were to take a snapshot of your current state of health, how would it look? Are you tired? Are you hungry? Are you upset about an argument you had with a friend or someone in your family? Do you have a positive outlook? Health is much more than the absence of sickness. Your health affects how you look, how you feel, how you act, your attitudes and performance in school, and work. It affects how you feel about yourself. Your health may help determine some of your goals and your ability to accomplish them.

Physical Health How well your body functions - Nutrition Physical activity Adequate sleep Regular check-ups Having the strength and energy to carry out daily activities. Go to school, enjoy your spare time, take care of your responsibilities at home.

Mental/Emotional Health How you feel about yourself How you relate to others How well you cope with life. When you are mentally healthy you like yourself for who you are. You recognize your achievements and learn from your mistakes. People with good mental health enjoy learning. They accept responsibility for their actions and stand up for their beliefs. People with good emotional health are in touch with their feelings and express them in appropriate ways.

Social Health How well you get along with others. Loving relationships Respect the rights of others You give and accept help Building healthy relationships with family members, making and keeping friends and communicating your needs to others are all important for social health. Social health involves communicating well.

The Health Triangle Mental/ Social Emotional Health Health Physical Health Mental/ Social Emotional Health Health The three aspects of health are interconnected, like the sides of a triangle. When one side receives too much or too little attention, the other sides change too. Have you ever been tired or hungry? Did that feeling affect the way you acted toward others? Have you ever gotten a stomach ache because you were nervous?

The Health Continuum Wellness – an overall state of well-being, or total health Premature Loss of Health Improved Health High Level Death and Wellness and Wellness of Health Many People Function below the Wellness Point A person with a balanced life is said to have a high degree of wellness. It comes from a way of living that includes making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on health knowledge and healthful attitudes. They know that all three aspects of their health are equally important to their overall well-being. Your health is dynamic. In any of the areas, there can be a sudden change or a gradual one.

Review

Lifestyle Factors Personal behaviors and habits, that help determine your level of health. 7 to 8 hours of sleep Eat nutritious foods Eat breakfast daily 20 to 30 minutes of activity at least 3X a week Experts have identified seven habits that make a difference in people’s overall health, happiness and longevity. How many of you practice at least 5 of these? Your attitudes also affect how well you take care of yourself. In order to practice good health habits, you must believe that there is some benefit for you, and that by not practicing good health habits, problems will develop. Lifestyle factors - Pg. 8 in book
