2 DO NOW O Write down some things that you could do to make yourself healthier. O Now pick one of those things and set it as a goal to try and achieve it. O We will go over our goals every Friday to see how we are doing!

5 What does healthy mean? O Suppose someone asks whether you are healthy. How would you answer? O Would you consider only your physical health? For example, would you think of how often you are sick? O Throughout this course, you will see that health is much more than just the absence of disease. O A state of well-being comes from understanding O the relationship among physical, mental and emotional, and social health throughout adulthood.

6 The Importance of Good Health O What is your usual response to the question, “How are you?” A true description of your health would require much more than a simple “fine” or “okay.” Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. O It is not an absolute state. O Being healthy doesn’t mean that you will never be sick. O Instead, being healthy means knowing various strategies when making decisions related to health needs and risks of young adults.

9 Why is health dynamic? O Dynamic means being subject to constant change. Examples include feeling fine one day and being sick in bed with the flu the next day. A sports injury can also suddenly change your state of health. Even your emotions can shift so that one day you are upset and the next day totally at peace.

10 Where does wellness come from? O wellness comes from making decisions and practicing behaviors based on sound health knowledge and healthful attitudes.

11 Name some of the lifestyle factors that promote good health……. O getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night; O eating a healthy breakfast; eating nutritious foods; O getting at least 20 minutes of physical activity three or more days a week; O maintaining a healthy weight; O avoiding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; O managing stress; O maintaining positive relationships; O practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries
