Presentation transcript:

Principles of Design By using the Principles of Design; balance, emphasis, proportion, rhythm, pattern, unity, and variety an artist can decide how to use the elements of art with a purpose.

Balance What is balance and what are the types? Balance is where the parts of an artwork are arranged to create equal visual weight. There are three types of balance:

Balance 1. Symmetrical balance is when one half matches the other half.

Balance Asymmetrical balance is when two halves are not identical but carry similar visual weight.

Balance Radial balance is spreading out in a regular pattern from a center point.

Emphasis What is emphasis and how is it created? Emphasis is created by stressing an area of art to draw the viewer’s attention or focal point Artists can create emphasis by giving an object dominance. Example: making an object larger or by using contrast such as color.

Proportion What is proportion? Proportion is how big something is compared to something else. Draw this:

Rhythm What is rhythm and what are the types? Rhythm is the repetition of elements of art that create a feeling of motion. There are two types of rhythm:

Rhythm Regular rhythm is the repetition of one element of art without variety. Draw lementan example:

Rhythm Alternating rhythm is the repetition of two or more elements of art in an even pattern.

Pattern What is pattern? Pattern is the repetition of elements of art in an artwork. Patterns are used by an artist to express an idea or feeling that they have experienced.

Pattern Draw an example:

Unity What is unity and how is it created? Unity is the quality of seeming whole. Unified artwork makes sense.

Unity Artists can create Unity by using a color scheme such as: Analogous colors (3 colors in a row on the color wheel)

Unity -Monochromatic colors- different shades of one color. (dark, med, and light

Unity Warm colors- reds, yellows, oranges Cool Colors- blues, greens, violets

Variety What is variety? Variety is the use of different elements of art to add interest to an artwork. Every famous artist combines a variety of elements of art and principles of design to have a successful work of art.
