Art 2 – review Rules that govern how artists organize the elements of art.

Balance Rhythm Proportion Variety Emphasis Unity Movement

3 Balance – Concerned with equalizing forces or elements in a work of art
Formal Balance – Way of organizing parts of a design so that equal, or very similar, elements are placed on opposite sides of the central axis. Informal Balance – Way of organizing parts of a design involving a balance of unlike objects.

4 Rhythm – indicates movement by the repetition of objects or elements.
Motif – A unit that is repeated in visual rhythm.

5 Proportion – concerned with the size relationships from one part to another.

6 Variety – concerned with the difference or contrast.

7 Emphasis – makes one part more dominant over another part.

8 Unity – The quality of wholeness or oneness that is achieved through the effective use of elements and principles.

9 Movement – the principle of design used to create the look and feel of motion and action.
