Cherokee Elementary Media Center Orientation Welcome to our Library! This media center orientation is intended to be a helpful guide to make your library experience more enjoyable.

Important things to know: Media Specialist: Mrs. Bentley Library Volunteer: Miss Sandy Hours of Operation: 8:05-2:55 (daily) Bring your agenda. Your I.D. barcode is on the inside back cover. Agenda My name is Mrs. Bentley and I am happy to be your media specialist here at Cherokee Elementary. We are very lucky to have Miss Sandy, our library volunteer. She works hard each to make sure the books are in good condition and are shelved correctly. You may visit the media center anytime between 8:05 and 2:55, with a pass from your teacher. Don’t forget to bring your agenda with your I.D. barcode inside. I.D. barcode

Things to Remember: Check-in your books Get a book buddy Use the OPAC if needed Choose 2 books You can keep them for up to two weeks. Check-out your books Some important things we would like for you to remember to do when you visit the library is to check-in your books first. Then place them in the return box and take a book buddy. You may visit the OPAC computers if needed. You are allowed to check-out two books and you may keep them for up to two weeks. When you have found two new books, use the self service station to check them out.

Online Public Access Catalog Our Online Public Access Catalog or OPAC computers are to the right as you enter the library. You may use them if needed to search for a book by title, author, or subject. We will have a specific lesson to teach you how to use these independently to locate materials.

Self Service Station The self service station allows you to check-in and out materials on your own so that I can teach lessons. If you forget the steps, there is a picture guide to help you. Miss Sandy is also available to assist you if needed.

Your media center has… Fiction Books-Books that are make-believe, not true (Picture Books & Chapter Books) Non-fiction Books-Books that are true, factual, and real-life Biographies-Books about a person’s life Reference Materials-Encyclopedias, Atlases, Almanacs, Dictionaries, Thesaurus, Record Books Award-Winning Books-Newberry & Caldecott Books Seasonal & Holiday Books-Books that have been displayed based on upcoming holidays Computer Lab- Available for research, Accelerated Reading, Pebble-Go, Tumble Books etc. Within the media center there is a section for fiction books, non-fiction books, biographies, reference materials, award-winning, and seasonal books. There is also a computer lab for whole group, small group, and independent work.

Fiction Chapter Books The fiction chapter books are located on isle one and two. These books are arranged according to the author’s last name. Shelf markers are in place to help you locate books quickly.

Picture Books The fiction picture books are located on isles three and four. These books are also arranged by the author’s last name. Again, shelf markers are in place to help you locate books quickly.

Non-Fiction Section The non-fiction books are located on isle five and six. They are arranged using the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

Look for… Dewey Number Shelf markers containing Dewey Decimal numbers and picture clues are in place to help you locate non-fiction books quickly.

Reference Materials On the right wall of the library, you will find our reference collection. This is where the dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, almanacs, and atlases are found. You are not able to check-out these materials, but you are welcome to use them if needed. Your teachers can check them out for class use if needed.

Award-Winning Books As you enter the library, you will see a section for Award-Winning books to your left. These are books that have won either a Newberry or Caldecott Award. I would love for you to try some of these books this year!

Seasonal & Holiday Books Seasonal and holiday books can be found right beside the self service station. Each month you will find books here based on the season or holiday.

Computer Lab Our computer lab is located on the back wall of the media center. You may come to the computer lab as a class or with a small group to work on an assignment or conduct research. You may also come independently if needed to take and Accelerated Reading quiz or use Tumble Books or Pebble-Go.

Library Rules: Walk & Whisper Use your Book Buddy Put books in the correct place Use your time wisely Take care of books Stand on the carpet while in line There are a few rules that I expect everyone to follow to keep our library a pleasant place to visit. When you are in the library I expect you to walk and whisper. Please use a book buddy to keep our books in the correct spot. Also, please put books back in the correct spot, with the spine facing out so that the call number can be seen. You should also use your library time wisely to locate books that you will enjoy. Once you have selected two books, stand quietly in line on the carpet and wait to check them out. Please remember to take care of your books.

If you need help… We will be happy to help you at the Circulation Desk! Of course, if you ever need any help at all, go to the Circulation Desk. It is located at the front center of the library. Someone will be with you as soon as possible.

Come see us at the CES Library! We are looking forward to seeing you often at the Cherokee Elementary Library!
