Library Orientation Today, we’re going to talk about... u How to enter and exit the library u How to find books u How to take care of books and other materials u How to behave in the library The ideas for this slide show came from Ms. Grose’s 4th Grade Class

Coming in and going out u Come in quietly. u Pay attention to see whether you are to go to the story corner, tables or computer station. u Walk and use quiet voices. u When going out, line up by rows or tables.

Library Media Center Rules 1. Use a quiet inside voice. 2. Treat others with respect. 3. Take good care of all library media center materials.

Taking Care of Books Treat your library books like a baby. Treat the books like kings.

Do not leave books in the sun. Do not leave books in the rain. A plastic bag makes a good raincoat for your library books. Keep one in your backpack. Protect your books from the weather.

Protect your books from little people and pets. Keep books away from young ones. They don’t know how to treat them. Keep books away from pets. They don’t know any better either. Choose a safe place to put your library book at home. A high shelf or in your backpack are good choices.

If an accident happens... If a library book gets torn or falls apart, bring it back to the library and let the “book doctors” fix it.

Protect books from food, drinks, and water. Don’t handle books when you are eating or drinking anything. Be sure to wash your hands before reading a book. Keep your books away from sinks, bathtubs, or windows. Water is really hard on books. Cars are not good places to leave books either. Take them out as soon as you get home.

Holding your place. My Bookmark Do not use pens, pencils, crayons, or markers to write in books or hold your place. Folding down page corners is not good for books. A bookmark is the best way to hold your place. Turn pages carefully.

Bookmarks and Labels All library books have labels. They are all important. Some labels tell you whether it is an award winning book or a holiday book. Other labels help us put the books away in the correct order or choose a book at your reading level. Some labels are used to check books in and out of the library. Please do not pick at or pull off these important labels.

Taking care of other library media center materials. Take turns using computers and take good care of the equipment. Remember that everyone in the school uses the library media center. Help keep the furniture in good condition.

Finding and Checking out Books u Bring your library card with you. u Get a shelf marker. u Replace the book correctly if you don’t want to check it out. u Take books to the circulation desk. u Wait quietly in line. u You may keep the book for one week. If it is a long book, you may recheck it.

Finally... Enjoy yourself in the library. Get new ideas that will help you learn. Don’t forget to return your books!
