2 Welcome to Your Media Center W.L. Swain Elementary Presented by: Celena Chastain MEDT 7477 Spring 2012

3 Basic Library Information Library Hours: 7:45 a.m.-2:15 p.m. for student use. Grades Kindergarten-2 nd may check out 1 book at a time. Grades 3 rd -5 th may check out 2 books at a time. Your class is scheduled to come to the media center one time per week, but you may return your books and check out new books at any time. Books must be returned within 2 weeks of check out to avoid an overdue account. We conduct two book fairs each year to give you a chance to purchase books. Mrs. Chastain is here to help you. If you have any questions, need help finding a book, or researching a topic, please ask!

4 Basic Library Information Our library contains fiction books, non-fiction books, reference materials, and magazines for your use. – Fiction books: Stories that are made up – Non-fiction books: Books that give you facts and information about a topic or topics – Reference materials: includes Encyclopedias, Thesauruses, Dictionaries, Atlases, and more. (we will study each type of reference book available this year) – Magazines: You will find a variety magazine topics in our library. Some are for entertainment and some are informational.

5 Basic Library Information How can I find the book I need on our library shelves? – Non-Fiction books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal System using Call numbers and the first three letters of the author’s last name. We will learn how to use the Dewey Decimal System to find non-fiction books this school year. – Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name.

6 How to Care for Your Library Book Please treat the books you borrow with great care. If you follow these basic guidelines, all students will have a chance to enjoy our library books. – Find a safe place to keep your book so it won’t get lost or damaged. – Have clean hands when using your book. – Turn the pages gently from the upper right-hand corner. – Keep books away from pets, babies, food, and water. – Do not trade books with anyone.

You may also send 1-2 students at a time to work or check out books at anytime. As your Media Specialist, I am here to help you and collaborate on student lessons with you.
