1 ABC’s of the Media Center Hevel and Washington Elementary September 2012

2 A is for Acceptable Use Policy As a student you agree to the Romeo Community School’s Acceptable Use Policy, which means you will use the technology equipment and the Internet appropriately.

3 B is for Books There are many different types of books in the library. fiction (science fiction, fantasies, mysteries, realistic fiction, and poetry) nonfiction biography reference (dictionaries, atlases, encyclopedias, etc.)

4 C is for Checkout Policy Books can be checked out for one week. Be sure to bring your book back each week, even if you want to renew it. GradeNumber of Books K, 1, 21 book 3, 4, 5 2 books (1 can be a magazine)

5 D is for Dewey Decimal System Non-fiction books in the library are arranged in order using the Dewey Decimal System.

6 E is for Easy Books Easy books are designed for early readers. They usually have many pictures.

7 F is for Fines There are no library fines for late books. However, if you do not bring your book back you will not be able to check out a new one. If you lose or damage a library item, you will be responsible for paying for the item.

8 G is for Grades Again, this year you will earn grades in library on your report card. Graded in 2 areas: Library Behavior Understanding of Library Concepts 1,2,3 ….. 1 is the best!

9 H is for Handle with Care All books need to be treated with care. Use clean hands when reading the books. Remember never to write in the books. In the event, a book is damaged, return it to the library to be repaired. Do not try to tape it or repair it on your own!!

10 I is for Illustrator The illustrator is someone who draws pictures for a book.

11 The book jacket is the outer - detachable part of the book. It usually has the book’s title, author and a cover picture. J is for Jacket of a Book

12 K is for Kyker Mrs. Kyker is the new Media Specialist at Hevel and Washington. Please feel free to ask any questions about the library and the use of its resources.

13 It is important to be a good listener during library and computer classes. 1,2,3 … Eyes on Me! L is for Listening

14 M is for Magazines 3rd, 4th and 5th graders may check out magazines for one week from the library. We have monthly subscriptions to many different magazines.

15 The Newbery Award is given yearly to the author that writes the best book for children. N is for Newbery Award

16 Use the OPAC to access the online catalog for assistance in finding books. OPAC is also available on every school computer. O is for OPAC

17 Library/Computer Lesson and Book Check Out Library Cards will be placed on the circulation desk. You will find the card with your name on it and then turn your book upside for it to be scanned. Shelf Markers -- Keep books in order and shelves neat. Couches and story circle: Find somewhere to read QUIETLY! P is for Procedures

18 THE LIBRARY IS THE QUITEST PLACE IN THE BUILDING!!! In the library, it is important that we use inside voices, not recess voices. There should be no yelling or shouting in the library. 5,4,3,2,1 Q is for Quiet as Mice

19 Open your mind to reading! So many books... so little time. R is for Reading

20 You can search the OPAC system by looking up the Author, Title, and/or Keyword. Ask a friend, then me. S is for Searching

21 In the library, we will focus on both library skills and technology skills. Make sure you always follow the instructions from the teacher. T is for Technology

22 The upper elementary classes will sit at the circle tables when entering the library. U is for Upper Elementar y

23 V is for Videos Videos may be checked out by teachers to be shown in their classroom. The video collection is not available for student checkout.

24 On the library webpage, there are many fun and exciting websites to checkout. Fun Games for K-2 Fun Games for 3-5 W is for Websites

25 X is for X-treme There are many x-tremely fun and x-citing things we will be doing in library this year.

26 Y is for Your Behavior. Your positive behavior could win you a ticket. All tickets will be placed in a monthly drawing for prizes.

27 Z is for Zero 000- 099 is the non- fiction section of Generalities.
