LAUSD GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS “a-g” Minimum Requirements Validation applies to Math, LOTE, Chemistry Substitution: Using another course in the same category to fulfill a subject area English: at most 2 semesters (or 1 year) of ELD may be used to meet the 4 year requirement Some requirements overlap CDE Requirements Math: 2 years of any math and the Algebra Requirement History: World Hist, US Hist, Govt, Econ Additional LAUSD Requirements 18

Defining “Credit” A-G Credit Years completed (grade of C or better) – demonstrated by A-G coursework OR SAT/AP/IB Exams CDE Credit Years completed (grade of D or better) – demonstrated by credit earned at a high school. District (LEA) is responsible for defining meeting the CDE requirements. Numerical Credit The District (LEA) establishes the number of credits earned per course passed. In LAUSD, 5 credits are earned for each semester course (grade of D or better). Credits are based on Carnegie units – in general, 60 hours is equivalent to 5 credits. 19

Graduation Waivers/Exemptions CDE:  Algebra 1 Waiver – Education Code (EC) Section 51224.5 (REF 5982.0) CAHSEE – IEP Physical Education – (severe injury or illness) AB167 (new AB 216)– allows students in foster care to graduate high school by completing only the minimum state requirements 21
