English Language Arts Students will read, write, listen and speak for: New York State Standards Students will read, write, listen and speak for: Information and understanding Literary response and expression Critical analysis and evaluation

Reading Reading Skills and Strategies Vocabulary Word Analysis Spelling Grammar Skills Research and Inquiry Novels - classics Writing

Writing Students will: Practice and model the writing process Carry through the writing process The program teaches writing skills and conventions through: Mini lessons and Skill instruction embedded in each unit Teach the Writing process using a Rubric. The students will receive various rubrics specific to assignment for success.

Social Studies Encompasses the history, geography and cultures of both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres from early civilization to the present time.

Harcourt Science Science textbook online. http://eharcourtschool.com Physical Science (Matter and energy, forces and machines) Life Science- Understanding living things. Research projects. Weekly hands on Science Lab experiments. Chapter Quizzes and tests.

Science Lab classes will include inquiry based hands-on experiences with the focus on STREAM: Science-Technology-Research-Engineering-Art-Math Through various activities and challenges, students will ask questions, plan, create, improve and communicate their ideas. 6th Grade JLCS January 30, 2018 Students will work on their own projects during their scheduled Science classes (planning to begin in December). To ensure that the students are reaching their goals, due dates will be assigned for each part of the project. On January 30th, Science Fair projects will be set up during the school day followed by presentations of their projects in the evening.

If necessary, Interim Reports will be mailed home on February 2 as well as May 10. Mid-year reviews will be given on February 6-7 in ELA and February 12-13 in Math. Our first Parent-Teacher conference will take place on December 11-12 in the afternoons as well as on the evening of December 12. Our second Parent-Teacher conference will take place on March 22-23 in the afternoons.

Extra Help will begin the week of 10/02/17. Information will be provided from each individual teacher. STAR will be administered three times during the school year.

Allergy Awareness Due to the large amount of allergies in our classrooms, only non-food class celebrations are allowed.

Class Trips Broadway play: School of Rock in May. Permission slips will be sent home soon. Boat trip: Dolphin with a focus on ocean life – towards the end of the school year
