1 Welcome to Curriculum Night: Team 6A

2 Grades will be based on common assessments (100%)
Science Inquiry based Science will be taught in quarters one and four. Four units: Cells Rocks and Minerals Chemistry Soil Grades will be based on common assessments (100%)

3 Science If you would like to see what we are doing in class, have your child show you in his/her binder. Study guide sheets with the learning targets are found in the front of students’ binders. We fill them out and complete each sheet as we move through the unit. Learning targets are aligned with CCSS.

4 Social Studies Sixth grade social studies is a study of the regions and people of the Eastern Hemisphere. Social Studies will be taught in quarters two and three.

5 Grades will be based on common assessments (100%)
Social Studies Units India, Past and Present Middle East, Past and Present Africa, Past and Present East Asia, Past and Present Australia and Oceania Europe Grades will be based on common assessments (100%)

6 Social Studies Ask your child what he or she learned that day. Referring to his or her binder is a great place to start. Help your child study his or her Learning Targets throughout the course of the unit. Play the Jeopardy and Quizlet games that are provided on Mr. Sheppard’s website before each assessment.

7 English Language Arts Common Core Standards
Integration of reading and writing When students are learning about reading, they are writing about their reading. When students are learning about writing, they are reading to improve their writing. Reading and writing go together. Sixth grade literacy will teach to the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards require that reading, writing and speaking/listening are integrated into learning experiences. The Common Core Standards focus on comprehending what is read, writing using text evidence, building vocabulary and working collaboratively in small groups. We are using reading and writing resources to support the transition to the new standards from Teachers College at Columbia University.

20 Math Because of the sheer number of indicators for 6th grade math, students can expect to have homework every night. Accelerated students will have double the amount of homework. Please encourage your child to ask questions during math class. We frequently circulate our rooms during math periods and check in with kids, so this would be a good time for your child to call us over for extra help.

21 Math Grading Policy Common Assessments: 85% of student grade
Chapter Tests Checkpoint Quizzes Team Tasks: 15% of student grade Team Tests Team Projects

22 Math Grading Policy Your child’s grade is determined by weighted categories. The weight of each category used is multiplied by the student’s average for that category. Those products are summed together and divided by the total of the weighted categories in use. How that percent grade converts to a letter grade is based on the school grading scale.

24 Math Assessments Checkpoint Quizzes Assess for mastery of a concept
Two or three per Quarter Not part of Accelerated course *Students will have an opportunity to retake Checkpoint Quizzes one week later to increase their original score. Students wishing to take a Retest will complete a Request-to-Retest Form and provide evidence of practice along with a parent signature.

27 Grading Student progress can be viewed through PowerSchool.
Report Cards are sent home quarterly. Common Assessment grades make up the majority of the report card grade.

28 Grading A = 89.5% - 100% B = 79.5% - 89.4% C = 69.5% - 79.4%
F = 59.4% and below

30 Technology Students will use chromebooks daily Misuse of technology:
Phone rang in class, Facebook, texting, listening to music, playing an unapproved game, etc. Access to technology at home would be beneficial for students (checking teacher websites, Power School, Science/Social Studies Jeopardy and Quizlet, math e-textbook). Jeopardy for Science too???

31 Positive Behavior Support System
OMS Discipline Policy Building-wide policy Positive Behavior Support System Good Apples Golden Apples (student of the month) Quarterly parties are building sponsored

32 Consequences Signing agenda for missing assignments or inappropriate behavior. Please review Agendas with your child every weekend when you sign the weekly Parent Signature. At 6 signatures, student loses quarterly reward. Students will get a signature removed after 5 school days (signature free days) per building policy At 9 signatures  after school detention.

33 Conferences Just like last year, Orchard will first offer conferences to students who are struggling behaviorally or academically. After those have been scheduled, there will be an option for parents to schedule a conference.
