5 Science There are four major units of study that will be covered in fifth grade science: These units include: scientists in training (study of the scientific method and metric measurement), life science (cells, body systems), earth science (ecosystems, weather patterns, earth’s changing, surfaces), and chemistry (properties of matter, and forms of energy).

7 English Language Arts (ELA): WRITING
Students write regularly for a variety of purposes: to inform to explain to narrate to persuade Through the writing process, students plan, draft, revise, and publish their writing. “Traits of Good Writing ” are modeled through teacher guided minilessons. 8 English Language Arts (ELA): READING
A blending of new Journeys educational material and a Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop approach. Students will be reading independently, with the whole class, and in small groups. All students have access to reading material through the Media Center, classroom libraries, and Myon. All students should be reading independently outside of school. Key Concepts - Reading: Developing close reading skills to analyze the written language Creating extended written responses to a wide variety of genres Participate in thoughtful discussions about both fiction and non-fiction materials Use comprehension strategies and the structure of different genres to better understand texts

9 Parent Portal Please check the Parent Portal regularly for grades and student progress. Interim reports are no longer sent home because data is available throughout the marking period. Instructors often put notes in for missing assignments, low grades, or to describe direct communications with students.
