Asbury Park High School Library Mrs. McNeill, Librarian HOURS: 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Behavior Expected in the Library Conduct yourself in a way that contributes to an atmosphere conducive to studying. Talk quietly at the tables Only four students to a table Food and drink are not allowed in the library

Behavior Expected in the Library Clean up after yourself; put materials on book truck or the circulation desk Push your chairs in before you leave. Take your trash w/you.

Behavior Expected in the Library Students must have a pass from his/her teacher in order to use the library. Sign the guest book. No games: computer games, card games, etc. No electronic doodads (MP3, phones, handheld games If staff asks you to leave, do so quietly (without argument or disruption…) Lunch time: Get a pass from a vice principal or principal.

Borrowing Materials Books are checked out for 3 weeks and renewed once. Periodicals and reference books may not be checked out. You are responsible for any lost books.

Computer Policy Computer use is on a first come, first served basis. Research and school related work is our first priority. Computer use must be legal, ethical and efficient. Chat rooms, games, social pages, music are no-nos No personal printing (printing that is not school related).

Acceptable Use Policy You must have an Internet User Agreement form on file w/ Mr. Daniels. Forms are available at the circulation desk. Visiting inappropriate sites will get your privileges revoked!!!

Dewey Decimal System Fiction Nonfiction

Fiction Fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the first three letters of the author’s last name. Review Dewey categories.

Non fiction 398.4 MAS Non fiction books are arranged numerically using the Dewey Decimal System and alphabetically using the last three letter’s of the author’s last name. FOLK-TALES OF ASBURY PARK Go over parts of the book.

Dewey Decimal System 000’s Computers, library, journalism 100’s Philosophy and psychology 200’s Religion & mythology 300’s Social Sciences (Ed., law, folklore…) 400’s Languages 500’s Math & Science 600’s Applied sciences (health, cooking, pets…) 700’s Recreation (art, music, sports…) 800’s Literature/Poetry 900’s Geography/History 92/920’s Biography

Reference Section Atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias… Reference books must remain in the library. “REF” is on the spine All Dewey categories 000-999 (non fiction)

Plagiarism “It's like lip-synching to someone else's voice and accepting the applause and rewards for yourself.” Plagiarism is using someone else's thoughts or wording in your work without citing your sources, or simply by depending on outside resources. Plagiarizing does not give credit to the party who really came up with the idea or/language.
