Welcome to 3EA’s Parent Evening Wednesday 15th February 2016 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Mrs Kate Ellem Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 7th year at Aspley East Has taught in both the ACT and Queensland Has taught lower, middle and upper primary kelle29@eq.edu.au

Mrs Brooke Anderson Thursday and Friday Classroom Teacher and Specialist Music Teacher for over 3 years Prior to AESS worked at Geebung State School Previous to teaching spent 9 years working as a policy officer for School Operations, Performance and Review bxrob7@eq.edu.au

How do we work together? Handover conversations on Wednesdays and Fridays Communication book Emails and regular texts Meetings as needed Ensuring transition between teachers is seamless for students learning and educational requirements

Communication with parents Parent/Teacher interviews offered weeks 7 and 8 - bookings can be made via SOBS Written report card sent home at the end of Term Two Formal interviews offered around this time to report on each child’s progress End of Year Report sent home in December Space for homework communication on the homework sheet Emails may be used for general questions You may also pop in after school to see us

Morning Routine Students are expected to independently complete the following morning routines when they enter at 8:30am:- Put water bottle in tray and lunch box in fridge Leave fruit break on desk Change reader if needed Sharpen pencils and tidy desk Take out an activity from finishing folder when all of these jobs are done

Refreshments/Lunch Encourage healthy eating habits Brain break of fruit or vegetable snack about 9:30am Students eat brain break while continuing their learning Eating times are 10:45am and 1:05pm Tuckshop can be ordered online or sent in a labelled brown paper bag Tuckshop is delivered first break

Incursions and Excursions There will be a number of incursions/excursions throughout the year You will be notified via notes sent home including costs

Classroom rules Rules are displayed on the whiteboard and discussed regularly All rules are related to the values of Aspley East State School Students have chosen personal goals related to these classroom rules

Classroom behaviour system 3EA Rewards Shop (with pretend money) $30 – prize $50 – 20 minutes computer time $100 – Teaching time role Whole class reward system where students learn to work collaboratively to achieve a reward as a group

Special days Monday – Assembly 8:45am Tuesday – Religion Wednesday – Computers and Library Borrowing Thursday – Music Friday – PE 8:45am

Creating Happy Homework Habits Homework each week will consist of: spelling from Year 3 list sentences number facts reader Reading to be completed each night Homework taken home on Monday and due on Fridays

Reading – at home Reading with your child: Readers, library books, suitable books from home, Sunshine Classics Child reads to parent/carer Child reads to themselves and seeks support for unknown words Child reads to themselves and retells to parent/carer what the book/chapter was about Child reads to parent/carer 2 nights and to themselves the other 2 nights

Spelling Students will extend their spelling knowledge through games, weekly spelling activities including a spelling test, revision of vocabulary previously taught and extension of vocabulary during literacy activities

CAFÉ Program The students participate in the school’s CAFE Reading Program which develops: C - Comprehension A - Accuracy F - Fluency E - Expanding Vocabulary Students will be doing reading activities daily

Maths Year 3 Maths is based on the ACARA mathematics program Mathematics strands include: number and algebra; measurement and geometry; statistics and probability Children complete problem solving activities daily Students are expected to learn their 2, 3, 5 and 10 multiplication and division facts - home practice will help Students are also expected to develop their mental computation skills and will be learning a new strategy for mental maths each week Extension activities are also available

Key Learning Areas Science: living and non–living things History: Australian celebrations and commemorations Geography: Australia and surrounding countries Arts: semester 1 - media and art Technology: planning, designing and creating a product

English and Writing We have a strong focus at Aspley East on neat bookwork so cursive writing is introduced and taught as an active process, not just copying into handwriting textbook Children write every day and are also taught time management skills for completing writing tasks within set time frames

Computers Students are provided with 30 minutes of computer time weekly Two key focus areas in Semester 1 learning how to create a PowerPoint presentation how to use the Mathletics program

Goal Setting All students will have three goals relating to: 1. Literacy 2. Mathematics 3. Behaviour/Social Skill Students have identified their own goals to work towards with support

NAPLAN NAPLAN – a point in time test that will be held in Term Two from 9th to 11th May Prior to NAPLAN, All students will have participated in practice tests Results will be released later in the year On test days please make sure your child has had a good sleep and healthy breakfast
