Pupils should be taught to: develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by: being encouraged to link what they read or hear to their own experiences recognising and joining in with predictable phrases learning to appreciate rhymes and poems, and to recite some by heart discussing word meanings, linking new meanings to those already known understand both the books they can already read accurately and fluently and those they listen to by: checking that the text makes sense to them as they read, and correcting inaccurate reading discussing the significance of the title and events making inferences on the basis of what is being said and done predicting what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far

8 Weekly Spelling Test This year your child will have spellings a week to learn at home. The spellings will be based on the sound or spelling rule covered in class that week. A weekly spelling test will take place each Friday. Children will have a new spelling list each Friday and they will have a week to learn them. In addition to the weekly spelling test children will need to practise writing their spellings in a sentence. They might incorporate a few of the words into one sentence- initially I would expect to see 2- 3 sentences for a year one pupil and 4- 5 sentences for a year two pupil. This will build up throughout the year depending on your child’s ability. The sentences will need to be recorded in your child’s home spelling book and brought into school every Friday. As well as this, we would like you to re-visit previous spelling lists throughout the year and test your child at home. We are taking all of these steps to ensure children retain and apply their spellings into their independent writing. Spellings will of course be addressed in school on a daily basis but this is a good way for you to support your child at home.
