1 Year 1 Parent Information Session Welcome!

2 Time Table Morning Session 8.50am – 10.50am
Middle Session am – 1.20pm Afternoon Session 2.00pm – 3.00pm . Specialist times Library borrowing- Tuesday PE/Music- Thursday ASSEMBLY- 9:00am Friday

3 Reading Reading in levels – focusing on comprehension, grammar, decoding and punctuation Teachers, Teacher-Aides and parent helpers supporting students Reading groups with year level to develop strategies Benchmark levels monitored over the year – focus on both word recognition and comprehension

4 Writing Assessment items are moderated across year levels
Term 1: Fairy tale retells Term 2: Information Reports Term 3: Letter Writing Term 4: Procedural texts Assessment items are moderated across year levels Focusing on punctuation, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and genre

5 Spelling Spelling levels of students is identified – will change with individual student progress Spelling practice in class and for homework Year level moderated assessment

6 Handwriting Beginner’s Alphabet Direction and formation of letters
Pencil grip, use of correct red/blue lines Encourage neatness and pride in presentation

7 Maths- Year 1 Mental computation – add and subtract to 20
Recognise, read, write and order numbers to 100 Count collections to 100. Use tens/ones partitioning Number patterns- 2’s,5’s and 10’s Solving addition and subtraction problems using different strategies Recognise Australian coins Use informal units in measurement Time- Duration using months, weeks, days and hours, o’clock, half - past time Problem solving program developing use of strategies to solve real-life problems

8 SCIENCE Term 1 Chemical science – Properties of materials – Mix, Make and Use Term 2 Biological science – Living things –external features and environments Term 3 Earth and Space science – How Earth’s resources are used and managed – Pollution of the sea Term 4 Physical science – Light and Sound

9 History and Geography Semester 1 HISTORY – Exploring my family history
Semester 2- Exploring the Impact of Changing Technology on People’s Lives Semester 1 GEOGRAPHY- Exploring spaces and places Semester 2- Places in our local area

10 Homework * Regular reading (10 mins each night)
* Read It Home reading journal- a record of nights read * Book should be at independent level with fluent reading * Spelling practice each night * Sight words- games * Computer - Reading Eggs and Mathletics *Scheduled Talks - Will be focusing on speaking skills. Talks to be prepared and practised at home please

11 Assessment and Reporting
Students are involved in assessment items that are common across the year level. Tasks are moderated across the year level to maintain consistency. Formal Parent Interviews are held in Terms 1 and Term 3. Appointments are welcome at other times during the year if needed. Report cards are issued in Terms 2 and 4.

12 Rules and Behaviour Rules are the same across each year level
Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe YCDI – 5 Keys - Getting Along, Confidence, Organisation, Persistence, Resilience Weekly YCDI awards on parade Playground – YCDI white slips. Assembly draw to win prize YCDI 25- students have to achieve 5 stamps for each key. When they reach 25 stamps= reward & certificate on assembly.

13 Classroom Management Rules Be Respectful Show consideration to others
Listen Take turns Use your manners Work well in a team Follow the teacher’s instructions

14 Classroom Management Be Responsible Learn – have fun Stay on task
Care for people – be kind Care for things – respect property

15 Classroom Management Be Safe
Walk in the classroom, on paths and around buildings Sit properly on chairs Play safely on equipment Stay in the school grounds during school time Don’t play around the toilet area

16 Consequences for Appropriate Behaviour
Verbal encouragement – I like the way you…,smiles * Prizes Weekly YCDI awards on Assembly YCDI awards to go into a House box in office Encouragement awards, stickers and stamps on work

17 Consequences for Inappropriate Behaviour
1. Verbal warning or rule reminder 2. Name in Blue Folder 3. “Time-out” in the classroom – students are given a time out in the classroom to refocus. 4. Time-out in a buddy classroom / Reflection sheet 5. Office/ phone call home

18 General Information No hat, no play Drink bottles – water only please
Please name all equipment. Consumables may need replenishing during the year. No toys at school please Year 1 students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves – “Oscar Organised”- Putting lunch in bag, water bottle, library bag, reading folder, hat

19 Days to Remember Tuesday - Library
Wednesday : R.E (Fortnightly), School Newsletter Thursday: PE / Music, Banking Friday: Assembly 9am Snack Shack – Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

20 Incursions/Excursions
Fairy tale dress-up day- Term 1 Old fashion school day / Bunnings Visit Term 2 Coochiemudlo excursion / Bunnings Visit- Term 3 Swimming- Term 4 End of year break-up- Event For the safety of all, attendance on excursions is by invitation.

21 Parent Help Thank-you with help changing home readers -greatly appreciated Reading groups- Mon, Tues and Wed. Thanks to helpers who have volunteered Parent “gifts and talents” welcomed – let us know if you think you could help our students in some way.

22 Contact Details We value open communication between home and school. To ensure that learning is not interrupted, we ask parents to make an appointment for lengthier concerns. Tuesday afternoon is our school staff meeting. You will notice that we will pack up quickly to get there on time. Please contact the office or send a note with your child to make an appointment.
