-Changed Word Order -Compound Subjects -Indefinite Pronouns -Collective Nouns

 Some sentences do not follow the basic format of Subject-Verb: Dogs bark ◦ Questions  Where is the dog barking? ◦ Sentences that begin with here or there  There are many dogs barking here.

 These are two or more subjects combined with and, or, or nor.  Be extra careful to check for compound subjects in changed word order sentences!! ◦ When subjects are joined by AND, they are usually plural. ◦ When subjects are joined by OR, EITHER…OR, NEITHER…NOR, NOT ONLY…BUT ALSO, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it.

 This group of pronouns ALWAYS TAKE A SINGULAR VERB!!!  MEMORIZE the box on pg 494!  Most of these words include one, body, or thing. These are singular!

 These are words that refer to more than one person or thing, like team, family, group, jury. ◦ Usually, they take a SINGULAR verb.  The jury is discussing the case. ◦ Sometimes, collective nouns take a PLURAL verb. This ONLY happens when the members of the unit are acting individually.  The jury are fighting among themselves.
