Summary of Use of Natural Resources in the UK FRS’s

Energy Climate Change – mitigation and adaptation Energy efficiency Renewables and micro- generation Smart metering CHP & Biomass

Energy Responses Most are measuring energy use Some have set reduction targets e.g. East Sussex  3.5% CO 2 /yr Partners: Carbon Trust Strategy: general environment policies over a specific energy policy – is this the best approach? Many noted promoting energy efficiency to staff e.g. newsletters

Clean Air Transport Fleet Journey’s to work Business Travel Driver Training Incidents CO 2 and other air pollutant emissions from fires

Clean Air Responses Variation in responses on CO 2 emissions: Clean Air and/or Energy? Different measures used e.g. total CO 2 or CO 2 -eq/kg or FTE Strategies: Clean Fuel, Travel Planning and monitoring air samples Some look at the environmental impact of fires

Clean Water Water Use and Pollution Prevention On own sites Operationally Did you know… Just 1 litre of oil can pollute 1 million litres of fresh drinking water

Clean Water Responses Many are measuring water use on their own sites Few targets: m 3 of water used or spend on water Operational water run-off was noted by 1 respondent Rainwater harvesting noted by 1 respondent Limited partners: Thames Water

Land and Soil Estate Management: Fuel Storage Foam training/storage Deep lift pits Interceptors End-of-Life Vehicles Operationally: Local Working Agreement with Environment Agency HAZMAT/HMEP

Land and Soil Responses Fewest responses, only 1 taking measurements Some considered fire contaminants and pollution control measures implemented where necessary Partners: Environment Agency Some links made to biodiversity work – but is this the right place?

Materials e.g. paper use, foam use, supplier engagement Waste Management and Recycling Did you know… The UK produces more than 434 mT/yr of waste. This rate would fill the Albert Hall in London in less than 2 hours.

Materials Responses Only a few noted recycling and waste management activities Some FRS’s are working with their suppliers to limit the use of materials e.g. switching to biodegradable detergents 1 respondent noted fuel use under this heading – is this the right place?

Summary Clear that a great deal of work is being done Majority have a general Environment or Sustainability Policy rather than issue specific policies Some common gaps e.g. operational water use, measurements for land and soil Some variations on the best place for issues to be considered e.g. Where is the best place for CO 2 to be considered? Does it matter? Questions raised: What are the best units for measurement? Is there a place for biodiversity? Is a holistic or issue specific strategy the best approach?

Group Discussion

Group Discussion Questions 1.What are we already addressing and what’s working? 2.What are the challenges and barriers to applying the assessment to the FRS.

Lunch 12.45pm -1.30pm

Group Discussion Questions 3.Opportunities for FRS collaboration 4.CAA and how best to provide information to local authorities?

Next Steps Presentations will be ed to attendees Summary of activities on natural resources? Practitioners network? Thanks for attending…..
