3 Sustainability: Economic
Growth of Rail Industry The NWRILG was established to bring recognition of businesses in northern England to the whole of the UK’s Rail industry. Through collaboration we will maximise our competitive advantage and exploit opportunities to innovate. Growth of Northern Powerhouse NWRILG sits in the very heart of the Northern Powerhouse initiative. The group will provide a single message to government and others with influence to ensure that the project proceeds and through it bring new jobs and prosperity to the region Skills and Workforce The NWRILG is fully committed to addressing the growing skills gap that the UK is experiencing in all disciplines of Engineering. The group will work to highlight this issue with Academia and industrial partners at every opportunity to increase the facilities for training, apprenticeships and upskilling the existing workforce.

4 Response to Climate Change
Sustainability: Environmental Low Carbon Railways Energy efficiency is the differentiator and this objective covers all activities of the membership, from manufacturing, workshop and office facilities, through to business travel and logistics. The NWRILG will encourage the rail industry to promote the carbon life cycle savings of rail compared to other modes of travel. Improved Air Quality The use of fossil fuels in all forms of transport is now acknowledged to be the greatest contributor to poor air quality in cities and towns. To help combat this, the NWRILG will promote the Electrification of the UK Railways and the increased use of Low Emission vehicles on roads. Response to Climate Change Energy use is at the core of the Rail industry. The link between energy efficiency, reduction of CO2 and combating climate change is obvious. NWRILG’s strategy identifies climate change as a key driver for growth in this sector. The NWRILG will also promote a resilient railway network in response to the changing weather patterns that result from the impacts of climate change.

5 Equality and Inclusion
Sustainability: Social Health and Wellbeing The NWRILG believes that the modernisation of the UK’s Railway infrastructure is the key to improving the health and wellbeing of both Rail staff and passengers. Safety and Security NWRILG is committed to health, safety and security in all that we do, encouraging leadership at every level, recognising that behaviour is key, that all incidents are preventable and employing appropriate resources to achieve world-class performance. Equality and Inclusion NWRILG is committed to developing an organizational culture which implements a policy of support for internationally recognised human rights and seeks to eradicate complicity in human rights abuses. Integrity and Trust The NWRILG membership is built upon trust and collaboration between the different organisations. Respect is given to every voice and opinion within the group. Where two or more companies have an overlap of business interests, full compliance with anti-competition codes and rules are observed.
