South Carolina  Is one of the original thirteen colonies.  After abolition began to come into effect, South Carolina remained a slave state.  Was named after King Charles I.

Indigenous People  The Cherokee and Catawba tribes inhabited the Carolina region prior to European settlement.  In 1670, a successful settlement was established in Charleston.  The settlement was called Carolina.

Slaves  After settlement by Europeans, plantations were built.  Indigo and rice were profitable.  Cotton became a southern cash crop.

Slaves  African slaves were brought to South Carolina for the labor of the plantations.  By 1720, they formed the majority of the population.  The cotton gin that came later led to more hours of forced labor of African descendants.

American Revolution  By the time of the American Revolution, South Carolina was a prosperous colony.  The economy depended on slavery.  The merchants and farmers of South Carolina integrated into a strong governing body.

American Revolution  South Carolina had the most revolutionary battles than any other colony.  South Carolina was the eighth state to enter the Union.  After the Revolution, South Carolina continued to elicit profits from cotton production.

Civil War  When abolitionists strived for the eradication of slavery, the South was yet dependent on forced labor.  The North had adopted industrialism and no longer had need of forced manual labor.  The South did not want to emancipate its slaves.

Civil War  The Civil War had erupted after the South refused to free the slaves.  The South had the right of nullification of any Union laws that were deemed perilous to the state.  In order to facilitate emancipation, the North used physical force.
