2. 12-1 Growth of the Cotton Industry Standard: 8.7.1 Describe the development of the agrarian economy in the South, identify the locations of the cotton-producing states, and discuss the significance of cotton and the cotton gin. Learning Target: We will understand the importance of the cotton industry in the South and the significance of the cotton gin. Learning Task: I will describe the causes leading up to the cotton boom in the South and the effects of this dependence on cotton. Essential Questions: Why did the South develop into an agrarian society? How did the invention of the cotton gin lead to an increased dependence on labor?

3. 12-2 Southern Society Standard: 8.7.3 Examine the characteristics of white Southern society and how the physical environment influenced events and conditions prior to the Civil War. 8.7.4 Compare the lives of and opportunities for free blacks in the North with those of free blacks on the South. 8.9.6 Describe the lives of free blacks and the laws that limited their freedom and economic opportunities. Learning Target: We will understand the differences in society in the North and the South Learning Task: I will compare and contrast the features of society in the North and the South in a Thinking Map Essential Questions: Why were the North and South so different? What were the primary industries in the North and the South?

4. 12-3 The Slave System Standard: 8.7.2 Trace the origins and development of slavery; its effects on black Americans and on the region's political, social, religious, economic, and cultural development; and identify the strategies that were tried to both overturn and preserve it (e.g. through the writings and historical documents on Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey). Learning Target: We will understand the development of slavery, its effects, and the abolitionist strategies to end it. Learning Task: I will complete a sequencing map showing the origins and development of slavery. Essential Questions: How did slavery come to the United States? What events led up to the Civil War and the end of slavery in the United States?
