At first few, labor provided by indentured servants, term of service over, need to find a new source of labor Slaves, Native Americans and eventually Black Africans brought over on the Middle Passage Most plantations had slaves under the supervision of an overseer 15 hour work day Lived in small one room cabins Physically punished for not doing work Resisted in many ways some simple and outright rebellion (Stono’s Rebellion and Nat Turner’s Rebellion
