Getting to Medical School A levels Chemistry usually essential (Biology in about half) Mainly As and A* (occ B for flexibilty) UKCAT / BMAT Personal Statement Self discipline Enthusiasm Commitment Leadership Work experience x 3or4 Interview – personal characteristics as above! Multiple Mini Interviews (for most now)

Medical School Traditional vs Integrated Quite Elitist Enormous fun (may not correlate well with exam success!) Day structured like school Long days, occ weekends, lots of essays. Practical classes, patients!! 5/6 years Can often intercalate a further degree May get banned from places! Good place to meet partners. Qualify with at least 2 degrees eg MB,ChB.

What next? After qualifying get Foundation Course for 2 years Then choose one of 65 specialty careers including General Practice. 4-6 years minimum in specialty training Research / Abroad Consultant or GP (or Specialty Doctor)

3 Important Points 1 GCSE and AS results now very important in selection Extra-Curricular activities must be done well Self Discipline is one of the most sought after skills

Don’t lie Show that you are Academically able Rounded – ie sport, music, hobbies Enthusiastic – give non slushy reasons for wanting to do medicine Experienced – SPRUCE course, work experience. Committed – in/out of school – long term, eg Scouts/Guides, clubs Leaders– evidence from in and out of school
