The rules! When forming a question, the conjugated verb comes before the pronoun –Canta Juan? When forming an answer the pronoun precedes the conjugated verb. –Si, Juan canta. If it is a negative answer. The pronoun still precedes the verb but a no is placed in between them –No, Juan no canta.

Just a side note. In English we say do or does when asking a question and even include it sometimes in the answer –Does this thing work? –Yes, it does work In Spanish, the idea of do or does is included by correctly placing the pronoun and conjugated verb. –Funciona esta cosa? –Si, esa cosa funciona.
