Drugs L Obj- What are the different types of drug? How do they affect the body?

Do Now Alcohol is a drug. Tick one of the following to explain why alcohol is classed as a drug It is a chemical. It boils at 78 °C. It dissolves in water. It affects the nervous system.

Outcomes… Recall the names of some illegal drugs Recall the different categories of drugs Describe some of the health risks associated with illegal drugs Interpret data from a table to answer a GCSE exam question

Starter Make a spider diagram of all the different drugs you know. Try to use the correct scientific names! TYPES OF DRUGS

What are drugs? A drug is any chemical substance that affects the physiological state of the body, such as how the central nervous system (CNS) works. Drugs can be categorized according to whether they are legal or illegal, or by the type of effect they have on the body. For example: stimulants – e.g. caffeine, cocaine depressants – e.g. alcohol, solvents painkillers – e.g. aspirin, heroin hallucinogens – e.g. LSD performance enhancers – e.g. anabolic steroids.

Legal or illegal?

Task Convert the information on your card into a diagram using no more than 5 words…… You will use your diagram (and not the original information) to teach someone else! 10 mins There are 4 different drug info cards.

In groups of 4 teach each other…. Name of drug Type of drug Effects on the body Any other information Lower ability could do this as an information hunt or with less info to convert

Task CORE Answer the following in full sentences: What type of drug is cocaine? can you give a legal example of this type of drug? Explain why cocaine can cause damage to the nose. Which part of the nose? Explain why LSD is the odd one out of the 4 drugs you have learnt about What does ‘hallucinogen’ mean? Which of these 4 drugs in most addictive? What effects does it have on the body? Which of these drugs is linked to long term mental illness. Why do you think some people think it is safe to take? KILLER Write an article for a young person’s magazine explaining why illegal drugs should be avoided. You should include: The different types of drug The effect each drug has on the body The long term health risks Any other interesting facts

Task EXTENSION Complete exam question

Effects on the body: A small dose of heroin gives the user a feeling of warmth and well-being, bigger doses can make you sleepy and very relaxed. It also slows down the way the body works and is a very strong pain-killer. Heroin is highly addictive and people can quickly get hooked. Overdoses can lead to coma and even death – as it can cause respiratory failure (this is what it’s called when your breathing stops). Injecting heroin can do nasty damage to your veins and arteries

Cocaine is a stimulant so it speeds up the way your body works Effects on the body: Cocaine is a stimulant so it speeds up the way your body works Increases heart rate Raises the body’s temperature Reduces feelings of hunger Users feel more awake Can cause damage to the nose through snorting Can cause heart failure and death Addictive Did you know? Cocaine was once a key ingredient of cola drinks until it’s health risks were realised and it became illegal

Effects on the body: Cannabis is a depressant. It slows down the body’s reactions Taking cannabis can make people feel chilled out, relaxed and happy, and they may get the giggles or become very talkative It can make you hallucinate, meaning that you might see or hear things that are not really there Using it has also been linked, in some people, to serious, long-term mental health problems Now been reclassified back to Class B

Effects on the body: It’s a powerful hallucinogen – this means that users are likely to see and hear things that aren’t there LSD can also make you feel tired, anxious, panicky and depressed There's no evidence to suggest LSD does any long-term damage to the body BUT people have been known to harm themselves during a bad trip

Plenary Why do you think cigarettes and alcohol cause more health problems than all the illegal drugs?
