3 TASK As a group, write down the names of as many drugs as you can think of HINT: Remember not all drugs are ILLEGAL. There are LEGAL ones too! 2 House Points for the winning team! There are many different types of drug: Cannabis Cocaine Heroin Steroids (sport enhancing) Nicotine/tobacco Caffeine Painkillers e.g. Paracetamol

4 TASK There are two types of drugs M_D_C_N_: these are drugs that help people from suffering from pain or disease R_CR__T__N_L: these are drugs that are taken for pleasure

5 Cannabis Most widely used ILLEGAL drug in Britain.
It is a mild sedative often causing a chilled out feeling or sleep. Some people think cannabis is harmless just because it is a plant – but it isn’t harmless. It contains a lot of dangerous chemicals. It causes memory loss and mental illness

7 Cocaine Cocaine is a stimulant. It makes the heart beat faster and stave off feelings of hunger. Stimulants affect the nervous system which controls your body using electrical impulses. They increase your reaction time. Caffeine is the same. It is very addictive. It can be difficult to resist the craving and strong psychological dependence. Class A drug – illegal to have, give away or sell. It causes blocked arteries.

9 Heroin Heroin is a very strong illegal painkiller.
Heroin slows down body functions. Most users get a rush or a buzz a few minutes after taking it. Bigger doses can make the user sleepy and very relaxed. It causes collapsed veins, vomiting and severe headaches

Sports enthusiastic claim steroids make them able to train harder If taken during a strict exercise regime, they can help build muscle mass Illegal and sports men and women are tested regularly

When a smoker inhales, the nicotine reaches the brain in 8 seconds. Regular smokers say it helps them relax and feel less hungry. It is estimated that smoking contributes to 120,000 premature deaths in the UK every year It can cause cancer, emphysema or heart disease
