Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Bell-Ringer: 10/13/15 1.What does SYNTHESIS mean? 2.Which organelle is NOT responsible for production/synthesis within a cell? (Also, write the functions next to each organelle.) Ribosomes ER Chloroplasts Lysosomes 3. What is an organelle in plant cells that is not in animal cells?

PHOTOSYNTHESIS The process that uses the sun’s energy to make simple sugars. These sugars are then converted to complex carbohydrates, starches, and stored.

Photosynthesis takes place inside the chloroplasts in the leaf of a plant.

The pigments (most commonly, chlorophyll) are in the membrane of the thylakoid discs. These are what absorb the sunlight.

Chlorophyll absorbs most wavelengths of light except green. Since green is not absorbed, it is reflected.

THE CALVIN CYCLE Carbon Dioxide enters the plant leaf through openings called stomata.

Section 9.3 Summary – pages The process by which mitochondria break down food molecules to produce ATP is called cellular respiration. Cellular Respiration

Section 3 Summary – page are membrane-bound organelles all eukarytoic cells that transform food energy (mostly carbs) into chemical energy (ATP) for the cell. Energy Transformer MITOCHONDRIA Mitochondria

Advantages of highly folded Membranes –Cell processes can be more efficient –Membranes provide a larger surface area for cell process to take place Remember all membranes control what goes through, so this forms interconnected compartments where homeostasis is maintained.

There are three stages of cellular respiration: GLYCOLYSIS CITRIC ACID CYCLE (Krebs Cycle) ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN Cellular Respiration

Section 9.3 Summary – pages The first stage, glycolysis, is anaerobic—no oxygen is required. The last two stages are aerobic and require oxygen to be completed. Cellular Respiration

Section 9.3 Summary – pages Overall, the electron transport chain adds about 34 ATP molecules to the ones already produced. ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN OVERALL RESULT OF CELLULAR RESPIRATION: Maximum of 36 ATP

What is atp ? Adenosine Adenosine Triphosphate Molecule in which energy is stored in the chemical bonds between the phosphates. Used as a quick source of energy for any organelle in the cell that needs it.

Section 9.3 Summary – pages PhotosynthesisCellular Respiration Food synthesized Food broken down Energy from sun stored in glucose Energy of glucose released Carbon dioxide taken in Carbon dioxide given off Oxygen given off Oxygen taken in Occurs only in presence of chlorophyll Occurs in all living cells Table 9.1 Comparison of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration COMPARING PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION:

Section 3 Check The process by which mitochondria break down food molecules to produce ATP is called ________. (TX Obj 2; 4B, 8C TX Obj 3; 9D) Question 2 D. the Calvin cycle C. the light-independent reaction B. cellular respiration A. photosynthesis

Section 3 Check The answer is B. Photosynthesis, light- independent reactions, and the Calvin cycle all occur in plants.

Chapter Assessment Question 1 Name two differences between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. (TX Obj 2; 4B, 8C, TX Obj 3; 9D)

Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Food synthesized Food broken down Energy from sun stored in glucose Energy of glucose released Carbon dioxide taken in Carbon dioxide given off Oxygen given off Oxygen taken in Produces sugars from PGALProduces CO2 and H 2 O Requires light Does not require light Occurs only in presence of chlorophyll Occurs in all living cells Table 9.1 Comparison of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Although both processes use electron carriers and form ATP, they accomplish quite different tasks as shown in the table. Chapter Assessment
